economic car for 0-1500

    Hi guys,
    i've been wondering about this question for a while now and sadly its one with a lot of different answers but hopefully a forum might help me narrow things down so here goes..........

    I'm looking to buy a car,economic, diesel, max engine size 2.2, versatile (i.e hatchback, estate or people carrier), that i would get at least 2 years out of, and with a maximum price of around €1500. I drive an average of 40 kilometres a day on motorways and am fed up of visiting the petrol stations with my 1.4 petrol car. I'm not looking for luxury or anything fancy just something that meets the above requirements.


    So what would people recommend?

    OP you don't do enough mileage for a diesel. Either buy a bigger petrol or go slower in your current car.

    The op is looking for a diesel car with a budget of 1500. This will limit them to older 10 to 15 year old cars, which are more tolerant to stop/start driving than newer more modern diesels.

    The op however does 40km a day (14600km per year) on the motorway which is fine even for the most modern of diesel cars.

    It's not really true to an extent that small mileage itself will cause problems in modern diesel. Imo it's more down to the environment in which they are used in. E.g Id rather a modern diesel that does 10k/km per year on a motorway than one that does 20k/km in stop/start driving conditions.

    Still though id still advice the op to stick with a petrol because most diesel cars for 1500 are going to be well past their best at this stage.

    my friend has a diesel passat, and he is happy with it, .... and surprisingly economical for 1.9 tdi.... over 40 mpg . if you look on around '00 diesel passats, audi , it'ill fit in to your requirements .

    Spending €1500 to save about 8c a litre at the pump and only doing 10k km a year is not the best way to save money.

    Spending 1500 on a car that will cost €951 a year to tax is bananas. (2.2 diesel)
