Were you already receiving it or are you a new applicant?

It starts from mid October to mid April so probably around beginning of October,
If you received it last year and your circumstances have not changed you will get it automatically

Sorry, new applicant never had it before.

So wait till October to apply?

Fuel allowance? I just pay for
    my fuel.I presumed everyone else
did too.I presume my hard earned PAYE will go towards your fuel allowance? what a wonderful country.

Then you should ring them or email them(possibly faster) for an application form asap. It can take many weeks to process the first application.

I was told I would have to apply via Longford as that is where I am paid from.

I presume there is a CWS section there?

I'm in Dublin so not sure what your setup regarding social welfare office is :)

Edit:Check out the link to see what you need to do exactly

Should you ever loose that job other peoples PAYE will go towards your allowances, so yes, it is a fantastic country.

You should apply now. Application form: http://www.welfare.ie/en/pdf/nfs1.pdf

    Claims

A person should apply to the office of the Department which pays their pension/allowance.

If a person is in receipt of long-term Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit they should apply at their local Social Welfare Office.

If a person is in receipt of a payment from a Health Service Executive they should apply to the Community Welfare Officer at their local health centre.

If a person thinks he/she is eligible for a fuel allowance, he/she should apply without delay as the allowance cannot be backdated.

If it were me I'd apply now sometimes these things can have a lot of applications and cause a back log so don't think it would do any harm to have yours in early the worst that will happen is you will receive a letter stating you have applied too soon and to reapply at the appropriate time.
