    Guys,

Im looking to buy a turbo trainer to get me through the (early) dark nights of winter.

Who has one? What should i be looking for? Air fluid or Magnetic? Get rear wheel for trainer or a cheap second bike?

Any other input people may have would be appreciated...

    Thanks

Tacx Satori is a popular choice. Lots of resistance and relatively quiet.

Don't know where is currently cheapest, but <200 from bike24.

    Or get a WattBike.

I have come round to the school of thought that its better to be outside in the dark, damp and cold on the bike than hitch it up to these spawn of the devil soul sucking devices.

Its a safety issue for me, dont want to be out cycling in the pitch dark, there is absolutely no street lighting where i live / cycle.

i agree completely, but for a lot of us the roads are pretty poor. i'd much rather be out on the roads but not sure it's feasable

that said, i will have the mountian bike out once a week to do a local forest climb near me with lights, apart from the fact it's great crack in the dark, it's zero traffic and gets me outside

You just need to disconnect the soul before attaching the resistance lever.

What are the thoughts on a current Turbo user buying a spare wheel specifically for the turbo?? The question was raised that there would be a 'mix' of cassettes for the chain and could cause problems with wear n tear on both the cassettes and the chain!

Is this something I should worry about???

I got a second wheel, it saves so much messing changing tyres etc. you don't have to spend a lot and braking surface etc. isn't important. My bike has 105, but I just got a compatible Tiagra casette and it's been going grand.

I was on a budget and time constraint, so got a Minoura B60 R it was a toss up between that and a Cyclops Mag+ which I'm told is quieter of the two, but mu LBS only had the Minoura available.

I guess I'm just one of the people who can enjoy indoor training, have already started frequent sessions on the rollers and it's only August. When I'm feeling lazy, I use the fork brace I bought off ColmGTI. Having a particular training plan (I use an app called Indoor Cycling Coach Lite, set it to as long as you can afford) and some killer music/film makes it really quite ok IMO. I'm currently listening to the Halo Wars soundtrack, which is suitably motivating.

Also it helps to remember that if you stick with it religiously, it'll make you a beast out on the road.

I picked up a tacx i-flow a couple of years back, and use it 3-5 days a week over the winter. I find the combo of VR with good music makes turbo training entertaining enough, but still get outside given the chance.

Don't think I could use the turbo in the summer; too hot. Even in the winter in an unheated room I sweat buckets.
