    Hi folks,
Looking for some advice, recently bought a 2007 grand vitara 1.9 ddis. Im happy enough with it apart from the poor mpg im gettin (mid 30's at best). So i am now thinking of getting the dpf removed and getting a re map done because ive heard this increases mpg. So i am wondering

    1) Do people think it will have the desired affect
    2) Has anybody had it done and what were their results
    3) Who should i get to carry out the job.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks holdmybeer, will give them a ring and see what they can for me. Have you used them before or is it on someones else s recommendation?

I knew a guy who was badly stuck to pass nct and drove to these guys from Galway to get it sorted. He found them good, I know the DPF Catalytic can be notoriously bad if you dont drive the car enough as they clog up with soot deposits quickly. Hope this helps.

thanks for your reply, ive heard some horror stories about dpf's alright but lucky enough mine is ok so far, light only comes on every six weeks or so and that's only really after the missus does a bit of town driving. I'm really just trying to boost MPG. I see cobys auto do a diesel engine tune to increase fuel efficiency, so maybe that will do the trick.

Have you looked up what mpg you should be getting in the car without having it removed. Low to mid thirties seems low to be getting from an 07 diesel even in something big.

Is there a dpf on these?

Apparently so, it's a Renault unit.

Yeah there is defibately a dpf on it ofcork. From my research on line i should be getting a combined MPG of 37 to 42, the figures varies between websites. I recently drove to limerick, all motorway and only got 570 km before the fuel light came on. Im not looking for a miracle but i thought a 1.9 diesel (2007) would be better than that.

I had my X-Trail DPF removed by Ryans Garage in Enniscorthy and found them excellent, if you don't mind the journey.
I found them on the Sinspeed website.
The engine seems to rev more freely now and uses less fuel as well.

Right, first of all, how much fuel did you actually use???

NO point coming on here saying that you got xx our of the tank before the light went on, we need exact figures to calculate your real MPG.

Best thing to do is brim the tank, drive for 100km+ on motorways averaging 100-110km/hr, refill again. Then work out the MPG.

City runs or short runs will give terrible MPG

Thanks for the reply hoagy, I'm only about 30 minutes away from enniscorthy so that could be a runner, did Ryans do anything to the computer after they removed the dpf, I see some spots to a re map to tell the computer there is no dpf there anymore.

Hi mullingar, on that limerick run I used 49 litres of fuel!

Yes, they did a remap. The DPF indicator light still comes on as normal when starting up and then goes out, so it looks as if the DPF is still there.
I got it done last March and there's been no bother with it.

Sounds good, do you notice a significant difference in fuel consumption! That's my main purpose for removing the dpf.

    I don't think I'd say significant, maybe 0.3 ltrs per 100km. It's gone from just over 8l/100 to about 7.8 l/100.
My reason for removing it was because it was stuffed. I have bits of the filter here and there is no way it was ever going to clear itself, a very expensive replacement was the alternative.

How does removing the DPF work when you go to do NCT??

As far as i know the dpf isn't a compulsory part of the the NCT test. I was talking to a chap in dublin who said that in future the NCT crowd might bring in a visual inspection for dpfs. That is why most garages are hollowing out the dpf and leaving the shell there, so it looks like there is a working dpf still on the vehicle.
