Getting the most from every single run

So over the last few months I have noticed that alot of my weekly runs seems to be just about hitting mileage and not so much based on pace etc..I feel like I have hit a small bit of a plateau simply because my training is too much of the same thing...

So, with the winter coming up, what will you be doing? DO you train with a race in mind over winter or do you just try to tap away. What are some tips for getting the most out of every run?

I used to train with a given race in mind, but I have changed to a "race when ready" approach. for me it helps me to stay focus on getting the most out of training and not getting distracted by the race in X weeks/days.

I'll have a race in mind but I'll also try to work on some intermediate process goals. These can be as simple or as complicated as you want.
