Dual Boot system - hdd to ssd + hdd

    Hi folks,

I'm planning to replace my laptop 500GB HDD with a 250GB SSD. I'm then going to wipe the hdd, and put it in a caddy and replace the dvd drive with it.

I know this isn't the place for advice on hardware. The reason I'm posting here is that I dual boot Windows 7 with Fedora 19. When I start up my laptop it goes to the grub menu where I pick what I want to boot.

The Windows partition has years of stuff. I'm not going to get rid of Windows but in the next couple of weeks I can remove about 50GB of project files I will archive. I was also looking at tutorials like this to move my Windows User files to the hdd.

That should reduce the requirement for the Windows partition down to less than 200GB.

The Fedora install is pretty fresh and woldn't take long to redo, but it would be nice to copy the MBR, Fedora partition and everything else over to the new ssd.

    My questions are these:

Does this sound workable or stupid?

Is less than 50GB enough to put Fedora on the ssd?

Whats a good tool to reduce the Fedora partition? Is it better to do it from inside Windows?

Where would I get a pointer on what parts of the linux filesystem I should keep on the ssd partittion and what I should put on a hdd partition?

Would splitting fedora over the two drives cause me any problems updating in the future? What if I wanted to get rid of Fedora and try something else?

I would do something like the following .....

Do you clean up of the existing OSs.
Create suitable partitions on the new drive to take the OSs.

Use Fedora and 'rsync' to copy all the files from Win to a partition on the new drive.
Do the same for Fedora using a liveCD or LiveUSB.

Install Grub boot manager to the new drive.

Edit the fstab file and boot list (if necessary) to reflect the new drive & partitions.

Plug in the new drive and try booting.

No it's not better to do it from inside windows.

Stick everything on the SSD. If it's starting to use too much space, start copying stuff to the HDD. You can mount the HDD partition anywhere you like (e.g. /home/hooplah/largefiles/) using /etc/fstab.

No. Linux doesn't care what's mounted where. You can have anything on any drive.

In that case you might want to keep your home area archived. It has all your settings etc. You can just plop it into the new distro and it should work for 99% of things.
