Your on-line reputation, do you value it?

I was just thinking about this and was wondering how people feel about their on-line reputation. It's probably easy to pretend you're something you're not (is it?) on-line so why should anyone care about the reputation of their pseudo-self?

I'll give my opinion later because I don't want to influence the poll.

Do you care about your e-reputation? 75 votes

    Yes, I care very much.

Well a lot of people look up to me on boards. Your reputation is everything when you have a public to think of. Bless their little cotton socks.

Don't know if you can be sure what you're reputation is.

I would appreciate it if you didn't tell anyone about my busy hands.
Not so much for myself, but I am so respected, it would damage the TOWN to hear it.
    Good night.

That's true because a reputation is built by people's attitude to you rather than how you sell yourself if that makes sense. I've was loaned money over the web by a starnger!

I was trying to sign up for an invitation only series of Xmas poker tournaments by way of 2+2 poker and the poker site wouldn't accept my debit card so I said 'sorry lads - wouldn't accept my card, enjoy'. Anyhoo, shortly after, I got a PM from one of the regulars saying 'I just deposited $100 from my poker account to yours so let's play'.

This fella (a guy from Manchester iirc) trusted me enough by my on-line rep to do this. He got his money back of course - actually, I wouldn't play in the tourneys until I managed to open an internet banking account and repay it.

So yeah, you can have a reputation I reckon.

what is the value difference between "don't care" & "don't give a ****"?

I'm hoping that the ladies on the internet have a loose reputation.

I'll put them both in a sentence and you can see the difference....

Girl 1 - "don't Care Bears live in the clouds?"
    Girl 2 - "I don't give a ****"

    :D

I care very much, I've a reputation as being the smartest and funniest poster so of course I have to keep up appearances so is not to let my fans down.

Well a lot of people look up to me on boards..

Just because your post is above mine doesn't mean I'm looking "up" at you.

Only when your post #2 on a thread

Good question. I try not to ever be concerned of others opinions of me, unless I see or they explain the logic behind that opinion, and I agree with it - an ideal that's pretty easy to apply online, less so in person.

When you're used to endless debates on heated topics going back the best part of a decade, encountering many (often subtly) unpleasant people over time in the process, and are able to see when someones judgments/criticism are justified or not - when you put all of that together, you tend not to care much about what people think, unless they provide a good reason to back it.

This is the only forum I use and none of my family/friends know my username so I really couldn't care less about my "online reputation". I don't understand why people would care what other people they've never even met think about them behind a keyboard. I suppose if you go to regular boards.ie meetups it would be different.

As for online reputation in terms of Facebook, then yeah, that's a different story.

I'm very self conscious about my online persona. If I can't make it here....I can't make it anywhere!

I'm just not sure if my pants are fancy enough for you lot! :(

I've been on Boards.ie for almost a whole decade and every post I have made is available for anyone who knows me to read at any time.

You can learn more about me from reading my posts on this forum than you can from knowing me socially.

I may not have an on-line reputation as far as being recognised by strangers online, but It's nice to know that i can give my Boards.ie username to anyone, safe in the knowledge that if they read every one of the posts I have made on this forum, that they wouldn't read something that I would be embarassed about.

My wife sometimes reads through posts that I wrote years ago and sometimes I do too and I am happy with the quality of my contributions on line.

Knowing these boards, reputation seems to play a factor and people of low rep are often ignored as though their post was never posted at all... :pac:

And numerous other forums, I've noticed this attitude of people... where your post is completely irreverent simply because you got low rep / posts when you've posted criticism and such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,209 ✭✭✭maximoose

Probably only 2 regulars on here who know who I am in real life, so not really.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,270 ✭✭✭tin79

    I have a confession. I wasn't born Tin79!

So no not too bothered but....made the silly mistake and leaving myself logged in so now my wife knows who I am. :o

    Hello Honey!

I don't care what people think of me :pac:
None of us (well bar one or two) use our real names. So why would someone care about their "online reputation" :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭Green Giant

Unfortunately yes. Would much rather be one of those who posts something and couldn't care less about the reaction it might get
