I don't think they can be reasoned with. I do believe the children within the church are a concern for child welfare authorities.

    Agreed. Just this church though?

Who gives a ****? The church has like 30 members and pickets the odd funeral etc etc. While many large Christian churches in America spread hate against the gays, the Muslims and the black but no one thinks twice as its the norm in the south.

Take the mormon church which follow the book of mormon. Which is book written by a nut job. But yet it has over 4 million followers (mainly in Utah) who were responsible for banning gay marriage in California for no reason other than being hateful. No one questions the actions of the church as its "legitimate Christian religion".

Logic and religion generally don't go in the same sentence

I don't buy them at all.

I honestly believe they just deliberately stir up extreme controversy in the hope of provoking aggression and assault in the land of the lawsuit.

Initially I thought Russell Brand was a vacuous idiot. Over the past year or two he has come across as a very intelligent fella who cultivated his whole "vacuous idiot" persona as a means of becoming famous which makes him even more intelligent because he did it perfectly. He used to be the one interviewing people, now he gets interviewed.

Fair play to Brand to holds back and even clams down the audience who are angry toward the WBC members. He let them have their say

Google Louis Therouxs documentary about them, well worth watching.

What's up with this 'I love you' bullshit?

That's biblical weirdness that is. Love thine enemy and all that bollocksology.

Get ****ed enemy - the only language you understand is a boot in the hole.

In fairness, it's worth giving a shít because of their kids - growing up in a family that fúcked up, getting brainwashed into wasting their childhood and adult lives following that nonsense, and being coerced into sticking with the family or being 100% completely cut off from them if they leave (which then risks being semi-traumatic/messes-them-up for those who do get to leave, harming their future lives even after - I know people harmed long-term, from far less extreme religious belief).

I don't get why people hate the family so much (ok I do :P but..), without seeing just how screwed up and coerced/brainwashed most of them are, and seeing that many of them need serious help, and that hating them actually is beneficial to fred and the others manipulating (consciously or not) the family, by helping keep the family isolated from the outside world, and thus held together.

I would say a good portion of them are probably potentially perfectly fine people, if they got away and were 'deprogrammed', but are manipulated into believing total nonsense, and are too fearful to leave.

The 'church' is essentially one extended family with maybe ten or fifteen others. A number of their younger high profile members have left in the last couple of years, including two granddaughters of the founder IIRC. It seems bizarre to me that such an organisation qualifies for tax exempt status.

    It's an old enough clip.

Like shooting fish in a barrel, I kinda like Brand but this is nothing more than wheeling out the crazies to try to garner viewers and demonstrate to a US audience how cool he is for his new (gone now) show.

He actually kinda failed in the US, he's back doing stand up now fairly successfully and I think he's actually quite funny.

Why do the WBC get any attention at all? Doesn't this sort of stuff only encourage them?

Exactly, I'm sure they went home from that patting themselves on the back for a job well done at spreading their message to all the sinners that watch the show.

IMO these people are the lowest of the low- they picket soldiers' funerals ffs. They preach love but their actions only speak of hate. They shouldn't be given any airtime and should have their poor children taken into care.

But in saying that they're so out there that they do make for compelling viewing so will probably continue to surface from time to time.

I love that video! It's worth noting what Russell Brand has done since, such as speaking with the Dalai Lama, standing up against politicians in the wrong and so on. Perhaps not before, but he certainly has become a much more openminded, conscious individual.

People need to stop giving that church airtime. They thrive off the publicity. Any attention is good attention.

Their website is 'godhatesfags'. I read one of their slogans too; "we turned America over to the fags, now they're coming home in body bags". That was in relation to 9 soldiers who died in combat, they "thanked god" and pray for 9,000 more -which they will picket!

These fuckers are seriously missing a screw and are dangerous

Had to laugh at one thing though, the retards want the death penalty brought back for sodomy. I wonder do the gobshítes realise it's not just men who like to butt fuck each other..

Logic seems to be lost and a lot of their arguments are inconsistent with past declarations they've made. Fag enablers is another term they have for heterosexual people who don't oppose homosexuality.

I think we should be pleased about just how fucking moronic they make themselves look.

WBC are obviously vermin but he's a sanctimonious arse.

Russell Brand is the cleverest, funniest and most engaging person I've ever heard speak. You could spend hours on youtube watching him. People's dislike for him is often rooted firmly in jelousy.

The whole turning up for work on MTV on September 12th dressed up as Osama Bin Laden is what made me dislike him.

Tbh I've heard one or two extreme posters here think the same way that not having a problem with homosexuality was enabling us and our 'homosexual agenda'. I've also been told I clearly hate straight people, I only hated them because they were blatantly homophobic and they thought they were doing the right thing by it, they just happened to be straight too.

At times I wonder if a few WBC members populate boards at times because they're clearly just as psycho.

Yup. Some people have departed the church and are cut off from the family. I was amazed by the family when I watched the first Theroux documentary - was expecting foaming-at-the-mouth inbreds. The most normal, pleasant people you could encounter, apart from Fred and Shirley (even she didn't seem all that horrendous when not talking about their manifesto). The kids were lovely - what's being done to them is horrific. And there was one awful scene where they were out protesting and someone threw something at one of the young kids. Obviously their protest deserved anger but the little kid being in the firing line was just grim - and the responsibility of the church tbh.
If you read about Fred when the kids were growing up - a monster.
And I don't always subscribe to the "People who really hate gays are probably gay" theory... but I'd put money on it that Fred is in the closet.

Do you know this for sure? I'd reckon people's dislike for him is that he comes across as an arrogant dick.

WBC founder Fred phelps may be gay, suggests former member

Really doesn't surprise me in the slightest either.

Russell Brand can act like a bit of a tit at times but he possesses a sharp wit and his writings are extremely insightful and erudite. As much, if not more than other, more celebrated individuals, like Stephen Fry for example.

I reckon Fred Phelps must qualify as some sort of sociopath or something. He belongs in some sort of institute. I saw Louis's revisit to the Phelps', and a couple of the children had left the family and were completely ostracized. You could tell that their parents were heartbroken at having to cut ties completely with their children, and the children were devastated, but the parents were forced to act as though they didn't care and that their children were traitors or some such rubbish. It's all just so sad really. Fred Phelps is an incredibly disturbing individual to promote that kind of thing.

As for Russell Brand, I've always found him quite smug and self-satisfied. I also think an great amount of luck has gotten him where he is, as I don't think he's a particularly talented individual. I can think of plenty of funnier comedians out there, and he's certainly not a great actor. How he's gotten to the point where he's a Hollywood star is a complete mystery to me.

Is it just my imagination or are wbc just unhealthily obsessed with sex, particularly gay sex? Every time I see them they're gay bashing. It seems odd to be so straight and yet so focused on what other people do with their orifices. I thought they were supposed to be sodding off to somewhere in the middle east? I remember thinking that they wouldn't last long over there.

Actually I believe it's other Christians (protestants, etc) who claim that Mormons are not Christians, but Mormons do consider themselves Christians.

    http://mormon.org/faq/mormon-christian
We are Christians in a very real sense and that is coming to be more and more widely recognized. Once upon a time people everywhere said we are not Christians. They have come to recognize that we are, and that we have a very vital and dynamic religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Also I think I remember Romney as part of the election campaign started saying Mormons are Christians too; admittedly to help him get votes but he wouldn't say it if it would piss off other Mormons.
