Approx 30k what kind of car should I buy?

We have about 30k and would like to buy a family car.

We are looking at bmw 5 series, bmw X3, Audi a6, Hyundai sante fe.......

We are looking for something that is automatic, looks kind of classy on the inside, with a comfortable ride, leather interior, lots of extras e.g sat nav, etc.

Also we like to take the ferry a lot, so a vehicle that would be spacious as well.

In addition, it would need to be a 2.0 ltr, but in one of the lower tax bands.

Where is the best place to start searching. Is it a good idea to look at a second hand sales garage with lots of different models?

Should we get a second hand bmw or merc?
Or buy a cheaper model, but buy new?

    Any suggestions would be great.

At that level of money it should be a car that you really like. Our suggestions will be based on what we'd like.

Get out there and drive as many cars as you can.

Op, I'll be straight up, most of us here don't have a pot to piss in re 30k....lets knock off a nought and your homies are here....

I'd echo this. Here you'll just be advised to buy something with at least a 3 litre diesel presuming high mileage. 5 series, a6, x5, x6, q5, q7 and whatever the Merc equivalents are etc. get yourself to a BMW and Audi garage and test drive. Also have a look at the UK market as there'll be a greater choice of high spec'd models.

While i'm echoing away i'd also echo the 535. The lower tax band doesn't matter if you have a 30k budget as it'll only restrict the fun you can have

Echo that too while i'm at it! So what if they can buy a house and car its irrelevant and fair play if they can. Seems bitter to go rooting through their posts and make a smart comment.

If it was my money I'd be looking at something like this Subaru Legacy Estate:

I really miss my legacy after seeing that pic. I can't wait until the diesels drop more into my price range.

If you are used to taking the ferry and want a practical and upmarket type car then I'd personally import a 5 series or A6 estate.

The new 5 series should be just about within your budget and comes standard with a lot of the bits you want and there is a great selection of them out there. As the 2.0d is low emissions the vrt isn't ridiculous. Currently you would save about 5k on average importing yourself compared to some of the crazy prices here.

You may have to go slightly over 30k all in to get the wide screen sat nav etc etc, but that's a judgement call.

Edit - had a quick check, and you can get a nice 2011 5 series Msport auto touring for 21k sterling, ~24.5k euro. Plus 7.5k on a well specd model and say 500 trip cost. Should be about 32.5€ all in. Could cut that down to 30k with a drop in spec.

Similar models are all 38/39 or so here. If you drop spec to a SE for 30k then you see them here for 36/37. It's still well worth the trip abroad.

Whatever you buy dude, I'll be able to buy in about 10 years time for 2k, so look after it for me, cheers.

I quite fancy one of these in 10 years time, and I'll be looking for an estate then, so go for it dude.

Indeed it is. However with all the extras including leather, auto and sat nav it will be hugely expensive and depreciate like a stone.

The Subaru is a great car but i don't think they are available in 2 litre diesel auto, and the interior is only average.

    If I had 30k to spend I'd go to the UK and get something like this;

Unlike some others in this country, I saved over the last 10 years. I had hoped to buy a newer car years ago, but unfortunately I got seriously ill. I'm on the way to recovery and thought you know what, I'm going to buy myself a nice car because life is short.

As for a house....well most of my friends bought houses in the boom time. I didn't. I couldn't afford them. Now I am older and wiser and yes, I saved.
And I would like to buy a house.

So it sounds like sour grapes!

Thank you for the great suggestions! I will hopefully get a chance to test drive them.

I looked at a 5 series bmw today. It was very nice!

I like the bmw x3 because it is not too big and it is supposed to be quite economical, but it is almost impossible to find one second hand that isn't the 'blue' ones. :-)

Great idea about the UK sales....I'm guessing its better to go to the North rather than travelling oversea.

Doesn't really fit what you're looking for, but if I was spending that money on a spacious family car, it'd have to be an RS6 Avant.

    Oh to have money!

Cannot stress this enough, you have 30k and you're after fairly common cars, with a bit of spec and a new plate I presume, if I were you I'd be a different as possible, get the most out there car there is, that meets your needs, i think it would be a shame if you were to blow 30k on a bmw, skoda or hyundai, or some other common as muck thing but that's just me, I'd be after mercs, jaguars, cars you don't normally see, like the citroen mentioned above

Anywho as has been said on many threads, it's your money to buy what you want, we can only suggest, best of luck :)

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    If I had €30k I'd buy a new Kuga

    Honestly?

I wouldn't buy any semi-SUV. As others said, the world is your oyster, you can buy any kind of car with that kinda budget, even a supercar!

Just read today that an American mega lottery winner (several hundreds of millions of dollars) is going to buy a 20 year old Honda NSX classic kind of supercar :)

Fair play to him. Although most of the yank ones are Acura badged and detuned autos... booo... I'd fly to Japan and get me a Type R! They're making more now than they did new unfortunately.

OP, I'd go with one of these:

I just got a second hand freelander 2 from mcelligots in tralee. great car. 2.2 turbo diesel, Huge inside, all leather, air con and a massive boot. Under 30k and the dealer was willing to haggle so happy days. I'd go for the manual version though with cruise control, that will keep you in the 500 quid region for tax. So far I've done about 980k on 110 quids worth of diesel so the milage is handy too. If your not looking for 4x4 they had a 2 wheel drive down there last week when I was picking mine up.

Btw -I don't work for these guys!

    Thoroughly agree with you.

I had a Mercedes E200 for 13 years until 2011 and then had a run of the mill popular car - not the same at all.

For the past year I have been looking at Mercedes, BMW etc. but found they are all fairly similar to look at - not like years ago.

Happen to see the Citreon DS5 and was hooked on its looks. Not the only thing though - found it great to drive and far more extras than the other cars I had looked at. Took the plunge and purchased - very happy so far :)

    Skoda Superb are b-e-a-utiful :D

If your going for a 4x4 or a car that looks like a 4x4 but is really only a 2x4 id suggest you take into account the extra running cost? 4x4 are a lot more expensive to maintain than you average family car, Engine's are usually bigger and there for if it goes wrong its costs especially turbo's, Suspension parts can be more expensive and for a decent set of tyres you would probably pick up a decent used hack for the same price  (Just an example)

People tend to see the car from a cosmetic and 'look at me factor' while they never take into account the actually running and long term maintenance so look at every detail of every car you look at and test drive.

For instance say a 5 series or E-class are nice but a cheaper option is the Superb which is by no means small and can come fully loaded and some say there more reliable than BMW or Mercedes ;)
