Here's a summary of the impact the Irish charity Trócaire has had in 2012-2013 :

In 2012-2013 Trócaire's work directly benefited the lives of 2.7 million people across the globe

    Some examples :

Guatemala : 515 people have secured titles to their lands
Honduras : 2,409 families now have access to treated water
Lebanon & Turkey : 20,000 displaced Syrians provided with vital aid
Mali : 4,000 internally displaced people provided with emergency aid
Sierra Leone : 520 women and children benefited from legal aid
Zimbabwe : 3,606 families have benefited from agricultural support
Malawi : 2,800 families received food aid during drought
Kenya : 2,451 survivors of sexual violence received care
Ethiopia & Kenya : 4,728 people tested for HIV
Ethiopia : 25,950 families now enjoy access to safe water
Palestine : 7,791 people provided with legal assistance
Myanmar : 20,000 civilian victims of conflict provided with food and shelter
Nicaragua : 64% of families in the communities where Trócaire work now produce enough maize for their annual consumption
India : 77% of families Trócaire work with are now food secure for more than six months

Trócaire spends 1% on its administration costs, it uses 7% for fundraising and publicity awareness, and the remaining 92% goes directly to charitable expenditure.

I have been having some discussions with people lately about some of the major charities that are advertising on the TV currently and the amount they spend on advertising on salaries and the tiny amount that eventually ends up going to the needy causes. The discussion has ended with pretty much unanimous agreement that Trocaire are one of the few good ones, maybe Gorta seem ok also.

As for oxfam, bernardos and others the jury's out.

Barnardos spend 86% of their income on service delivery (Annual Report 2012).
