Car Insurance

Got a quote recently for the car for fire and theft only. Over €500 with Liberty Insurance. I have full licence, no claims and just 2 penalty points.
Does this seem very excessive? I called them up but were only willing to drop €40 off.
    What do people think?

No telling without knowing your age, driving history, what car it is, area of the country...

    etc. etc. etc.

If it was a quote on a new Mitsubishi EVO and you're 23 then it's brilliant...

    Sounds about right to me.

You've heard this before, but shop around. Try all the brokers, I personally find them the best value, not necessarily the cheapest price. Eg bonus protection, windscreen cover all included.

In all fairness nobody here is going to know if it is excessive or not as insurance is not priced from a fixed menu. It's dependent on the person being insured, the car you are insuring and the value of the risk that the insurance company put on you.

The only way to know if you are getting a good deal is by shopping around for a more comprehensive price on the same type of cover.

I've 10 years clean driving experience. Driving the car for social and pleasure.
    Car is around 1.5/6.

123.ie coming up with €290. Some difference.

Like the others have said, a good quote is the lowest quote you can get for the cover that you need. Shop around for that quote.

My wife was with Liberty/Quinn for a couple of years but the last 2 quotes were similar to the OP's.
She has the exact same cover for €280 from chill.ie (R.J. Kiln & Co. are the actual insurers named on the disc) now, just renewed last week.
I have heard from several people that Liberty are quoting much higher for renewals, and as the OP said they are not willing to come anywhere close to matching lower quotes.

Ya it is funny. They quoted me a silly quote last year too but when I told them I was getting it cheaper elsewhere they suddenly dropped the price by €150. I kid you not. This year they are not moving though. It is a pain to change insurer though as I have to scramble around now and find details on penalty points etc.
Is there a central website where I can find when penalty points went on?

I presume you mean third party fire and theft?

Saying that the car is a 1.5/6 is not giving us much to go on. A 1.6 Focus is going to be a lot cheaper to insure than a 1.6 Toyota Levin.

I dont think so, but if you ring (I think) Shannon they will tell you.

Its not that much hassle to change insurers in fairness; I did it recently and it was pretty painless. Fill out a form and send in copy of no claims bonus.

I think I have only once gone with the same insurer (for car or house) once for consecutive years in the last 9 years. Each year I try about 10 companies or brokers and go the best price, so I am forever switching around. I also have a policy of not allowing my current insurer match the price. My view (and I let them know this) is that if they can't be bothered being competitive on renewal then they can feck off, they've missed their chance.

Yeah thats just daft really. Several times I have back to my insurer with cheaper quotes and they have bettered them. I just want the cheapest policy I can get (that offers good cover and benefits); principles dont come into it.

I don't see how - they match the price, not better it (I am talking about identical T&Cs) so if x offers renewal of €200. Y gives me price of €150. x comes back and matches at €150, I go with y. it's no hassle to sign a form and stick it in the freepost/postage paid envelope.

You're doing it wrong so. They match the price you tell them, which often means bettering the actual quote.

I tried that before - I think with axa or allianz (can't remember which) and they wanted written confirmation of the better quote - so that scuppered that idea :D

While in principle I know you're right, I've to go with Uriel on this one.
To me it's kinda like : well hang on, so you CAN do it cheaper but you were just trying to screw me? Fine then, I'll take my business elsewhere.

I find the whole insurance thing in Ireland a bit strange, it's almost like the companies don't want any repeat business. Either that or they just rely on people's aversion of going through the 'hassle' of changing and hope people will just send in the renewal without looking at it too closely.

@OP : I've always been very happy with 123.ie, they'll arrange cover with different companies and will send you the no claims letter a little while before the policy expires.

I did and I was told that they would only price match with written confirmation of the price they were to match. If I remember rightly the renewal quote was something in the order of €160 higher than the alternative quote (exact same T&C)

That's largely my rationale for doing it.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I must think I can change the system/philosophy... :P yeah..right..

But of course they're trying to get as much money out of you as possible, for exactly the same reasons as you have for wanting to pay as little as possible! It's nothing personal, this is how the world works.

Getting a good quote with FBD. Just going to go for third party as feel fire & theft is a waste when value of car is so low, with excess being taken into account too. I'm also adding on the bonus protection which is probably worth it in case of a claim. Coming out at just over €310.
