Cheap is relative, and anything pre-2008 will be on the old cc system. Have a look on motortax.ie for the rates for the different engine sizes.

The tax system changed in 2008, to an emmissions-based system, it's explained on the motortax website.

Whatever about men being sexist, it's not nice to see women turning on themselves.

I'm sure there's women out there who know a lot about cars, I'm not one of them and no problem admitting it :)

I'll have a look at the tax site. Himself wouldn't care and would just get the bigger tax backet one, I'd like to save some money but also if its hard to get a cheap tax one I'd prefer to get an estate and at least have something extra for the same tax

Lots of people are clueless about cars, many men just have a harder time admitting it.

Do bear in mind that tax affects purchase price too - cars that are expensive to tax can often be bought far more cheaply than their lower-tax relatives. Do your sums for the total cost of ownership over whatever period you plan on keeping the car.

If you are looking at a 06/07 Octavia then motor tax will be based on engine size. 1.4 litre and 1.6 litre models will be cheaper to tax than 1.9 litre and 2.0 litre because they are smaller sized engines.

You can enter the car's reg number on the motor tax site and it will tell you how much it costs to tax.
