Well when Pat Kenny starts on Newstalk who else is jumping ship?. Reply with a simple 'Ho'.

I don't have the opportunity to listen to the radio at that time but I would if I could!

My response to today's Pat Kenny / Newstalk thread is this.

    How does anyone know yet?

I'm not going to declare an intention to defect until I know what format his show will take and what (and who) RTÉ put in place to compete with him.

Interesting times ahead no doubt, but blindly intending to follow Kenny a month before his programme goes on air is premature.

Despite his professionalism and intelligence Pat won't have access to the same wealth of research and back up that he enjoyed at RTÉ.

Furthermore, because of its historical dominance and gravitas, the state broadcaster will remain the first port of call for politicians and government agencies when responding to press releases and issuing statements.

It will be interesting to see how Kenny responds to this challenge and an early indicator will be where Minister Noonan delivers his post budget radio Q&A phone in. Montrose or Diggs Lane?

I'll certainly tune in to Kenny on Newstalk when he begins there but time will tell whether the dial remains on 107.6. It depends on the quality of what RTÉ replaces him with.

Whoever does fill his shoes has a tough act to follow.

Ho, bit only if the topic being discussed interests me, otherwise it's Radio 1.

Ok I shall get my simple Ho to reply when she has finished her shift walking the streets. :D

Here's a slightly more elaborate version of the suggested reply, from a band who look if not quite sound like one of Pat's musical choices:

If they give the Pat Kenny job to Tubridy I will remove the Radio One preset from my radio.

Its looking like Sean O'Rourke got the job.

    Now that is serious competition.

    Excellent choice.

    Congrats to him.

    I hope it's true.

I have had a low opinion of the way that RTE manages its talent, often taking somebody who does one kind of job well, and giving them something different that doesn't suit them - then leaving them there, dangling in the wind. Taking John Murray out of the business programme where he was very good, and giving him a poorly thought-out morning slot was a terrible move.

I also feel that the allocation of work seems to be handled in a cliquish manner, with a few favoured insiders seeming to get the best gigs. In my opinion, some of the favoured insiders are not the best talent available. It seemed to me that two of those I consider to be favoured insiders, Miriam O'Callaghan and Ryan Tubridy, were making shapes in the hope of getting the job. I certainly would not like either of them there.

I hadn't seen Sean O'Rourke's name mentioned in connection with the job until today. Perhaps that is because he does not make self-serving asides during his broadcasts, nor drop a word in the ears of journalist friends. He just gets on with doing an excellent job. And most listeners know how good he is, and know little else about him.
