    Hi all,
My girlfriend has started a job and has been wanting to buy a road bike for some time, she's gotten on the bike to work scheme in her new place. We're going to go have a look in Dublin tomorrow for a bike for her and get one ASAP. Where would people recommend in the city? We're probably looking around the 800 mark for the bike itself, has anyone got any suggestions on what to look for specifically? I cycle myself but have a cheap racer so wouldn't be much help in terms of what groupset to look for, etc.

So I suppose then where would be the best shop in the city in terms of helpfulness/value/selection?

    Thanks.

If her job is using a voucher scheme then the intermediary take 10%. If her job isn't using a voucher scheme then you should be able to negotiate that 10% off the list price. The bike shop would be willing to give it to the voucher company so they'll give it to you. If there's no voucher involved, make sure you mention that when haggling!

I'm not sure what you should get for that money but make sure that it's got combined brake/shifting levers, not separate thumb style levers like last year's Sora. There's probably some of those still around and you want proper integrated shifters. The 2013 Sora moved to integrated shifters, it's 9 speed and probably common in that price range - it's grand IMO.

Tiagra is one step up but I don't know if you can get that for 800euro. The main advantage of Tiagra over Sora - now that Sora is using integrated shifters - is just that Tiagra is 10 speed. Not that crucial a difference but nice if you can swing it.

Here's a ladies bike with the integrated Sora levers and a carbon fork. http://www.thinkbike.ie/bike_shop/2013_Giant_Avail_3.aspx

Your girlfriend may, or may not, prefer the ladies geometry bikes. I think they tend to have shorter top tubes. Worth trying them and the gents bikes out.
