    Hi,

Contemplating purchasing a 09 Skoda Octavia L&K - has 115,000 miles on the clock but is in absolutely brilliant condition.

I know the seller well and he looks after his cars. Vast majority of the mileage were UK "motorway miles".

Anyone think the 115,000 miles would be an issue?

Providing it's priced accordingly and was serviced properly it should be fine.

Yeah - price is on the money, and full service record so fingers crossed all should be good.

    Buy on condition, not miles.

Being 09 shouldn't the clock be in km not miles?

OP, make sure that there is no vibration through the clutch. High mileage diesels are fine once they are serviced regularly but unfortunately most have a dual mass flywheel (DMF) that tends to fail through wear and tear especially on high milers.

    Thanks Bazz,

    It's a DSG tiptronic gearbox.

The car itself should be fine once it was looked after. However you need to think about resale in 2-3 years time when the mileage is up on 170k or whatever and is basically sale-proof. That is when you might start to think it wasn't such a bargain in the first place.

    Thanks George,

Re-sale not bothering me so much, intention is to hold onto it TBH, Missus' car will be due a change by then.

Get it at a very good price. Don't expect too much back for it when you sell in a few years time. Budget for DMF replacement and also budget for a serious DSG bill. Apart from that, you should have a reliable and economical car. Enjoy the low tax and the low fuel consumption :)

What would the "serious DSG bill" be?

I couldn't tell ya. It's a great technology but it is unproven to be reliable yet. Maybe I'm a pessimist here, but if it were me, I'd expect a bill at some point.

George Dalton works on these cars a lot, he'll have a much better informed opinion :)

If it's any help I had a 06 Passat with 244,000km (roughly 150,000 miles) on it when I sold it and never had any issues with the DSG box in mine (2.0 TDI Passat). It was serviced on time though at main dealers which can't have hurt either (except maybe my wallet!) :)

There are recurring stories of dealers not maintaining DSG boxes per the manufacturer's recs.

For me buying a car serviced at a main Dealers holds less weight than a reputable indy.

But again, not everyone knows or has access to a reputable indy.. nevermind knowing if they even ARE a reputable indy.

are you saying you'd take a bunch of scribbled receipts over a fully stamped dealer log? At least with the latter you'd potentially have some comeback with the manufacturer should anything drastic (and known) go wrong.

Sure, if it was me and I saw a history signed by one of the guys like George here then I'd be very happy with that, but how are you to tell if Joe Bloggs in wherever is decent or not?

On something as specialised as dsg id have to have a main dealer history. I realise that indies in a lot of cases offer a superior service for less money, but a vw dealer would be more familiar with them
