Job title

    Hey guys,

I found a permanent job (jay!!!) in a small business as the company accountant, I am not qualified, but in the process completing ACCA. Currently have the Diploma in Accounting and Business.

Just wondering what my job title should be, as the manager said to call myself the company accountant, but not sure if this would be appropriate.

I just want the title to carry the gravitas that it deserves, as the manager explained to me, he wants the finance department to gain some respect amongst the employees and that I should not see myself as the bookkeeper, but rather the accountant - does that make any sense?

    Any suggestions welcome!

AFAIK the term "accountant" doesn't have legal protection, meaning that you don't have to be fully qualified in order to call yourself one. It differs from other professions, such as architects, doctors, engineers, etc who must be fully qualified before they can use the title. There are plenty of people who call themselves "Fund Accountant" or even "Staff Accountant" who are not qualified, (or even wish to qualify) and it is perfectly acceptable as a job title. Just don't be using titles like "Chartered Accountant" or "Chartered Certified Accountant" as these would indicate that you are fully qualified and a member of a professional accountancy body. I see no reason why you can't call yourself the Company Accountant, as it clearly reflects the work you do, and besides, you are working your way towards qualification. Didn't Bertie Ahern call himself an accountant, but never qualified as one.

    How about "Financial Controller"?

    Company Accountant is fine.

But you'll earn the respect of your colleagues by your actions, not your title.

there's no grey area there, you're the company accountant. You can be a great accountant without any qualification.
