Should I take car to garage?

Was driving along and went to change gear and got a really bad shock from the gear stick. Obviously pulled hand away but put my hand back on the gear stick to change gear again and got a shock again - this time causing my hand to bleed. It's only a tiny bit - like a pin prick really, but mentioned it to my parents who are telling me to take it straight to the garage.

Would the shocks have been caused by something wrong with the car? I figured it was just a build up if static energy. Should I bother taking it to the garage?

Check the knob for splinters of metal. I can't believe you would get an electric shock, but a splinter....I had precisely that experience with the Golf. Some metal trim was disintegrating - into my hand. Nasty.

I have a metal gearknob in my car and have never gotten a shock from it (from static electricity). If in doubt it cant hurt to get it looked at; its unlikely that anything in the car is causing it but you never know.

An electric shock will not cause a pin prick cut.

Get a lump of cotton wool (de make-up pad etc) and rub the gear knob, this will find the offending sharp corner.

I often drive my aoutomatic car but when i change to the geared fiat bravo sometimes my gear change caused the stick to jump out and whack my hand hard .Normally it was first gear and when i changed into first gear then after a few second the gear stick jumped out of gear and whack my hand .As it was normal for me to keep my hand on the gear stick to get ready for second gear it was worse in first gear but could happen in any gear . This was really caused by the clutch had a faulty manufacturing problem and there had been recall about this .Anyway clutch was replaced when it finally gave up and the problem stopped .
Maybe there is very severe vibration coming down the gear stick
