I'm asking this for research reasons rather than personal reasons, but if a potentially harmful video/photo etc. starts doing the rounds on social networking sites, can Gardaí have that removed or what can they do once a complaint is issued?

Define harmful. Harmful, as damaging to a reputation? They won't get involved unless there's a crime being committed in the tape, nor should they. You can request the site take it down, but if it goes viral it will just be reuploaded again and again.

Like token101 said, you can't really police the internet.. The stuff that people don't want spread around is invariably what will spread and once that genie is out of the bottle it's nigh on impossible to put back in..

That's great guys, thanks a million! I meant harmful in terms of reputation. Like KPMG girl and those kind of videos where someone looks really bad and then it goes viral.

Garda have powers, and ways to act, if whatever is there is illegal. And if it's hosted overseas, they work with their colleageus overseas - eg for child porn.

But they're not going waste their time over someone being a d*ck and someone else putting a video of it up.

Think of it this way if celebrities can't get stuff taken down about them online I don't think there is much chance when it's it the line of reputation.
