Hi all. Looking to get a driver for a friend as 30th present from a few of us. He's an average golfer no set handicap but would estimate at around the 18 mark. His drive would probably be his strong point as he knocks it about 50 yards past the rest of us driving close to 300 yds at times.

He currently gets a loan of his brothers Taylormade Burner.

We have a budget of around the 200 mark but it is slightly flexible. Just wondering what recommendations people would have.

A driver is something that's down to each individuals taste if you know what i mean? I like taylormades whereas some other golfer will like ping and others callaway etc.

I'd get your mate a voucher for a golf shop and let him pick it out.

If I was hitting it 300 yards I would never change the driver....

Voucher is the best option... he may like a set of wedges

    Hey,
Golf clubs are a very personal thing. U could spend 400€ on the best driver and he cant hit it ten yards, yet hit a cheap driver 300 yards..
If i was you, id just bring him with you- let him hit a few different drivers with different shafts etc.
And that way ur present actually gets used instead of gathering dust.

    Just my opinion.
    Sean

Thanks. Had a feeling that might be the best option although we'd prefer to be able to give him something rather than a voucher.

is he using a "hurling grip"? if so use the €200 for lessons so he can hold the club right.

A driver is pretty specific to each person. If you ever see the "whats in the bag for pros" they value their drivers the most, as they find it so difficult to find the right one.

I originally had a Taylor MAde 500 series which I hit like a dream. Moved to a Titleist 975j, then K, then 983 model. I started to fall in love with the 983 model and the clubhead, was so nice to hit.

When I came back I figured I'd upgrade my driver, as technology in that area seemed to have the biggest improvements. I went with a Taylor Made burner 2, but found it to be awkward and a low ball flight. Got fitted for a Titleist 910 and havn't looked back. Regularly clocking 300yrds + on average.

Big risk getting a quality driver without ever hitting it. I know it's class to get someone a club as a gift, but considering how specific golf clubs are to each and owns tastes, might be best to try get him to hit some first. Go to one of the ranges that do demos, spin a yarn about you looking into a new driver, and get him to hit loads and see what he likes.

Why don't you get him an electric trolley

He had lessons to correct it a good while ago and has a standard grip now. Good thinking though!

I'd only be jealous! Possibly though I think he needs other bits a bit more. Thinking a voucher is the best idea all round. Thanks for the advice lads.

Where's good on the southside of Dublin to try out a range of Drivers? Might just spin out with him on the day

Voucher is always a solid bet in fairness :)

Why don't you all buy a rangefinder then see how close to 300 yards he's hitting it, may well be 30 to 50 yards short of it.

If you really love him you could bring out to the titleist place at carton house

Ah sure could even be over it. Uses Golfshot on the iPhone which usually does the job.

Could be a plan as one of the lads is a member out there too so may be able to get a good deal. Makes me jealous every time I call out to him!
