It's a nice map, but it seems like a huge amount of work, and I'm not sure it would get used that much. Would they be better publishing the map data in some open format so it could be used on OpenStreetMap or Google Maps for route planning mayble?

Are they really proposing a cycle track going down pottery road? That's a glorified lane way. It widens at the Amgen plant but before and after that it's a bit of a joke of a road. They'd wanna fill in some of the craters in that road before putting a cycle track anywhere near it.

I'm with you. It seems like a nice idea but I don't really see it getting used all that much or it being of any real benefit to those who cycle most of those roads day in day out.

Looks like they're proposing to re-open the bridge at Dartry Mills - that would be a nice addition to the area

*edit* Route down the back of Lepoardstown racecourse would be nice as well
Is there really a need to put a cycle lane on the Blackglen Road?
Even Bird Avenue is a bit ridiculous - just route cyclists through Mulvey Park, the way they've always gone to avoid it.

No, Its just a map with some colours.
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has developed a Cycle Network Map for the County to help cyclists plan their trips by bike. This map consists of red, amber and green routes to help cyclists determine the most direct, safest and most efficient route for their journey based on their cycling ability.

Yes. (If the link doesn't work, search for PC/05/08 here.)

The road is due for a major upgrade and cycle tracks are included in the design.

Arguably, such maps are intended to be of benefit to those who don't currently cycle but would like to, or even for those who do currently cycle but aren't aware of local shortcuts or alternative routes away from traffic. Not everyone has forensic knowledge of all cycle routes in their local area or further afield.

It's part of a proposal to develop the Dodder as a walking and cycling route (DCC, DLRCC, SDCC areas).

I think Mulvey Park is to become a signed cycle route as part of the development of a link between UCD and the Luas.

Its basically a cycling skills network map so it grades roads according to the challenge the traffic conditions pose. It is a very welcome development to see an Irish local authority doing something like this.

Yes ideally it should be online or in an open format - also with dynamic data - because the grading of a particular junction or road can change depending on the time of day.

The Galway Cycling Campaign has done a similar exercise for the city and county towns. We did look at using Google maps as a baselayer for publishing the data. The problem is that you cannot override the colour system that Google use for the roads so you have to superimpose your colours on top of theirs and unfortunately the final effect looks a bit funny.

The data could be used for a route planning app - i'm fairly sure someone is already doing something similar in the UK.

A map with fairly pointless colours.

Actually the more I think about this map the more annoying that it is. Its essentially useless in PDF format as its mahoosive and unsearchable, and it essentially does nothing that current maps don't do already. Identify main roads as busy? Naturally. Show that I can cycle to Mount Merrion from Blackrock without using the main road? I never would have figured that out with just an ordinary map.

The sad part of it is that DLRD Co.Co. no doubt have a fairly minuscule part of their budget designated for encouraging cycling, how much of it went on producing this pointless map?
