If you have an internet router at home you can transfer the files over the network.

On second thoughts, if you have an external HD, back up the old laptop with Time Machine and simply restore onto the new macbook. Restoring with time machine will also transfer software and settings.

Once you backup the old macbook format the hardrive.

You won't be able to restore from an old model to a new model. Neither is it recommended.

    Best using migration assistant.

You can transfer from a time machine backup, directly from the mac or over ethernet via the network.

Lol, Short term memory loss? Don't worry - The reminders app will look after that for you :P

apologies about the late reply. I am not bothered about settings moreso using the HD to save all my music, pics movies etc. However I will want to upload some of them to the new mac for ease of access esp the music.

So is it as simple as dragging files from old mac to HD and then uploading them the same way to my new mac?

    cheers

oh and one last thing...I need to restore my old mac once I have transferred my files but I do not have the original discs. Is this possible? What do I need to do?

If your music is in iTunes it can be a bit of a drag to drag. Be sure to search for information about iTunes library. Frankly, Migration Assistant is your best bet. It's "all or nothing" but you can delete what you don't want. I think there's an option NOT to transfer applications.

and don't forget to authorise your new Mac on the iTunes Store before you de-authorise the old one. This is yet another good reason to use the migration assistant.

    Hi,

The only options I am getting for migration assistant is either transfer from this mac to another that is connected to it, transfer to this mac from a backup disc or transfer to this mac from another that is connected to it.

Is it possible to transfer to my portable HD and then upload to my new mac?

    cheers

"Transfer user accounts, applications, and computer settings to your Mac from a Mac, PC, or disk. ...", then click the first button. This is the opening window I get from Migration Assistant V5

    Back again.....

OK so I managed to get all my music, movies, pics etc from the old macbook on to the portable HD and successfully transferred my music onto my new macbook. However now when I attach the PHD it asks if I want to use it as a back up using TimeMAchine. When I opt yes for this it says it has to clear my PHD first so I will lose all the stuff I put on it.

What is the safest way for me to save all my stuff? Should I transfer it all to new Macbook from PHD(drag and drop) and then have TimeMachine delete it from PHD before using it as a back up?
Can I partition the PHD so that one partition is used for back up and the other for movies, tv shows, music etc??

As you can see I have not a clue what I am doing so any help would be appreciated again,

    Cheers
