If this works every other company who makes power meters is screwed. Fair play garmin, wonderful design

    Ridiculous price.

Why? People will happily compromise if the price is right, otherwise Powertap would struggle against SRM.

Yes, it looks great, but at twice the cost of a power2max it won't sway people who want a power meter on a budget.

Seems to be at the stage they claimed to be at 18 months ago, except now with a price ...

It would need to be a heck of a lot cheaper to destroy the competition. You can get a PowerTap or Power2max for way less.

    Aye too expensive

Another potential downside is the fact that it ties you to a particular pedal. If you are already sold on the benefits of a different brand of pedal then this might be an insurmountable hurdle - not to mention having invested what could be a a lot of money in your existing pedals which would make a change even more expensive, and possibly facing issues with your shoes if you change too (e.g. some shoes are built specifically for Speedplay 4-hole cleats and even if an adaptor plate becomes available it'll add to the stack height and may necessitate other changes to adjust your bike fit = even more inconvenience and hassle). Personally I think it's great that the Vector is now available, but I certainly don't believe it's going to kill the competition.

Having said all of that, I really hope the Brim Brothers get their power meter to market sooner rather than later. That's tied to a particular pedal too, but it happens to be a pedal that I already use :)

Ohh I suppose the price may be a factor. I got slightly swayed by the prettiness of it:)

Has it yet been shown that power measured at the pedals is accurate?

Plus Garmin's manufacturing process is woeful

Yes but Dan Martin is in the video using them... so it must all just work perfectly and accurately ;)

They've held off releasing it so long they have just got to get it right first time or all credibility in the product will be lost

I was looking forward to trying out a pedal based system, but I would be concerned about it's durability - the bit hanging off the axle looks fragile and I wonder if it would survive a crash (hub and crank based systems are simply not exposed in the same way)

It would have to be substantially cheaper than a P2M or powertap for me to even consider it.

Review here suggests that they read 10 - 20 watts under other power meters that they compared them to (Stages and PowerTap) but the differences in power readings were at least consistent throughout the tests.

    Anyone ordering a Garmin Vector?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭ashleey

    No.

However stages meters are now available officially in the uk and are cheaper again

No doubt their big selling point will continue to be the the portability of the system, but for the price they're asking you could nearly build two brand new powertap wheels.

Garmin are probably going a bit mental that their biggest competitors dropped their prices by 30% just as they released their system. They probably thought they were onto a sure winner.

Also, changing a wheel is significantly quicker than changing pedals.

And there's a revised design Power2max coming too.

You'd change most crank designs as quick as you'd change pedals.
