deregister for VAT

    Hi I earn way less then 37,000 which is the threshold for Vat can I deregister I rarely charge vat but subnit returns each year. I am a decorator. Tks

    You can - you just need to contact revenue and request deregistration.

    They may claim back VAT if you put through a large amount of claims for VAT inputs. This is to avoid people abusing the system.

    Other than that you'd be fine.

    Not sure what u mean by putting through a large amount of claims for VAT inputs. Do u mean if I calimed vat back? I have never filed in a vat return ( if thats what they are called ) so have never paid vat to the taxman or claimed vat iukwim. Can you back date the deregistration??

    Have you charged clients VAT on sales? You'll need to pay that over to Revenue.

    thanks for your replies! I have prob charged vat 10 times over the last 15 years but wouldnt have a record of them as dont keep stuff for more than 5 years. COuld I risk it and deregiter backdating it? wud revenue know I had charged vat those couple of times if I havent submitted vat returns ever???

    The only advice that can be given on this forum is to properly abide by the law.
