2010 Diesel Accord with 80k Miles.. to much mileage?

    Hi Folks,

Test drove a Honda Accord 2010 diesel 2.2 litre yesterday. Basic spec brought in from the Uk, Only downside i could see is that it had 80 thousand miles on the clock. The price was around 17.k buying straight.

Same dealer has a 2010 Irish spec type S accord coming in over the next couple of weeks with only 40 thousand killometres on it. Obviously going to be a pricier car. Estimates it will take about 21.5k to buy it.

It was my first time driving the diesel accord and coming from a 05 civic 5 door petrol its a big step up. Couple of questions - is the tax 380 on the accord? Also is the quoted 50 mpg a reasonable figure?

I thought the engine sounded fairly noisey starting off, but she drove lovely. Its got miles instead of killometres though on the clock which is a bit offputting.

Would the 2010 S spec be a better buy for more money? If you had 18k to spend - what would be the best spec/mileage/year combination you'd hope to pick up in an accord?

    Cheers,
    Mick

Basic spec and high mileage is a bad combination come resale time.

For that reason I would personally rather drop down a year and buy a better spec lower mileage car.

The tax is €390 on them. 50mpg is not realistic in them, low to mid 40s is about right. The likes of a Passat 2.0TDI will be much better on fuel.

They are a lovely car to drive but not the most refined in their class.

80k miles is not exceptionally high for a 3yo diesel. People buy diesels primarily because the do higher mileage. I'd be more suspicious of a diesel with very low mileage. It is probably a bit above the average ok but that should be reflected in the price. I'd say that 17k is a bit over the odds. A good rule of thumb is that a 3yo car should cost roughly half what a new car of the same model and spec should cost with a reasonable adjustment up or down depending on condition, mileage and service history. New Accords start at around €33k for the ES model and €35k for the S model.

Surely a better rule of thumb is what similar cars are selling for?

€17k is very cheap for a 2010 Accord.

Tax is €380ish alright OP. 50 mpg is bandied about regularly in relation to this generation Accord, more like 43/44 in my experience.

So really something like a 1.6 octavia diesel would be a much cheaper car to run?

Don't know much about the Octavia, but the boot would be bigger!
50 mpg is achievable, motorway driving and greenfinger driving, just not realistic. Might as well be driving a 1.2 Fabia at that stage imo.

Yes but they are several steps down in class from an Accord!

I think 17k is on the steep side, i bought a 2.2 diesel 2008 one in May 2012 for €12,500 up North, its a UK import with basic spec, there were 68,000 miles on it. Very happy with the car

I was gonna buy a Spec S a month or two ago from Denis Kinane Motors but decided against it because I thought it was too pricey! The Type S and EX models have a excellent spec and comfortable ride. The Type S is rare enough on the roads but are way too pricey in my opinion. I'm on the look out Octavia vRS now! :) Best of Luck...

Well maintained Accord should see close to 50mpg. We had a 2.2 Diesel CRV and it averaged 38mpg with mostly urban driving (brick shaped aerodynamics, heavy with 4wd), mid 40's on longer runs and 50mpg on city to city driving.

You must have the old shape. €12,500 cleared and all? That's extremely suspicious if it's the new shape, they can't be got for £12k sterling in good shape with low miles in the UK.

€21500 is not cheap for a 2010 Accord irrespective of the spec.

what would you consider a fair price for a 2010 S spec in good condition with a tow bar.. 40k kilometres ?

how would it compare to 2010 A6 or A4? I know someone who brought in a 2010 A6 top spec for around 21k euro and i think the tax on the a6 is only 280?

The dealer will be making around 3 grand on the car (might be wrong) but you will get a years warranty with the purchase. The Spec S will not hold it's value like the BMW, Audi. I was willing to pay €17k/18k straight. 40k kms is only 25k miles, I would check the history, etc so it's not clocked.

Adhering to the manufacturer's recommended service intervals and well shod in the tyre department, lenient driving will result in 50 mpg-mostly on Motorway driving and no cc being used(cc drops it off 2-3mpg according to the onboard display).
Very hard to sustain that average across all driving. It's a good sales pitch but not true unless you've got Hyacinth Bucket in the passenger seat.

Well, I'm talking from experience here. A CRV can do 50mpg on motorways and i drove a 2.2 CDTI Civic to Belfast and back with a 62mpg average. I dont think its illogical to conclude that the same engine, in a car which fits in between the Civic and CRV, can get into the 50's.

my wife seems tempted by the idea of trading our civic for an s type accord.. anyone know if the s type 2010 model has parking sensors? Her question not mine!

Should have front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. When you put the car in reverse the wing mirrors automatically dip down towards the ground. You can turn on and off the parking sensors if you want.

I test drove that car last year, that (Irish) Type S is the basic spec 150bhp? I wouldn't touch it, boring colour and the spec inside is poor. Awful alloys on it. Waaaay too much money for it!!

The Type S 180bhp UK spec is the one I was talking about. Class!

I think the Irish Type S spec is poor. I dont think you will get parking sensors, etc as standard. I might be wrong. I think you should look at the EX model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,009 ✭✭✭micks_address

Yeah from honda's website it doesnt have parking sensors on the current s spec.. still id think i'd be happy enough with an irish car if the money was right... would all uk imports have miles on the speedo?

    Yes.

Would it really matter that the speedo was in mph? Its a minor inconvenience but we're all old enough to remember the old system!
