100 standing on train to Heuston last Thursday

Got the train from Limerick Junction to Heuston last Thursday. At least 100 people standing on the train. 5 carriages on the main Cork to Dublin train coming up to a bank holiday weekend is madness. Snack cart could not get through the train with the amount of people. I could only think of what would happen if the train had to brake hard suddenly. There would have been a lot of injuries with people flying forward. Paid €61 for this "wonderful" service.

Happened to me before too. Was asked to get out of my seat to let an older person (who more than likely didn't pay) to sit down.
Had to stand by the door because when I sat on the floor I was told it was a safety concern yet standing wasn't.

Interesting when we are often told Cork-Dublin trains are empty and they should cut prices!

Was talking to a man who got on at Portlaoise. Commutes back to Dublin every day and said the train is like that at that time of the day everyday!

    What train were you on?

    What time train was it?

I meant the specific train - what time of day?

I was on the 12.20 ex Cork to Heuston I'd say there was about 20 standing departing Mallow 3 X ICR.

In July 11.00 to Cork sometimes during the weekdays was 3xICR, madness!
I saw once at least 30 people standing. Could not believe that. Is s not possible somewhere in Europe to see 3 carriages train set between two biggest cities on main railway lane. Plus 11.00 is peak hr train I believe as it has connection to Kerry line, so lots of tourists as well.

That's the problem with the ICRs, 3 cars are not enough and 6 can be too much at times. 4 and 8 car sets would have been much better imo. We'll see what happens after Irish Rail trails with the new ICR formation experiments.

That has now changed - the ICR has switched to the 12:00 service.

    Cost cutting I'm afraid!

You can get vouchers in compensation for having to stand:

ONLY if you had a reserved seat.

A normal ticket is a ticket to travel - it does not guarantee a seat.

If you reserve a seat and another seat wasn't available then yes you can.

If you didn't reserve a seat or of there was seats available then no you can't

But if you reserve a seat isn't it incumbent on you, should you want to sit in that seat, to demand to sit there (as you've booked it) and ask whoever is in it to sit/stand elsewhere?

This happened to me last Thursday on a Mallow to Tralee. They never have the names above the seats on this particular train for whatever reason. It was pretty packed so I just stood. On reflection I should have gone down to the seat and told whoever was in it that I had booked it.

I'm wondering in this instance, would a person be allowed to receive a partial refund or not. Irishrail could argue that I didn't question or demand to sit in a seat I reserved.

Yes people should ask them to vacate the seat first. Some people chance their arms and sit while some don't check the display and sit down. The odd time the reservation notification isn't displayed while occasionally people sit in the wrong seat, carriage or even the wrong time train. That said, it's still dependent on those people doing the honourable thing and giving you your rightful :)

Yeah, true. I don't think I had the heart to meander through a crowd, talk to a person that looked like the surliest on the damn train and politely ask them to remove themselves. Anyway, I might inquire about the refund and see how it goes:)

I was fortunate enough to speak with an inspector and he signed my ticket, noting the leg of the journey where I didn't get a seat. So then I went to get the refund at the ticket office and the person I spoke with wasn't very optimistic about refund inquiry.

But she said to at least fill out a refund request form when I've completed the second leg of the journey and take it from there.
