I would appreciate any suggestions on prices for the following train journeys. Tickets seem to be expensive What is the cheapest ticket you can buy?

11-09-2013 Train Vienna - Nuremburg/Erlangen (One way Single)

    12-09-2013 Nuremburg/Erlangen - Hamburg (One way Single)

I see things in relation to bahncards, bayern ticket etc but i presume for one off journeys they are not applicable.

you dont say what time of day you must travel so I cant tell you what the price may be.
I did see an option for 69euro overall price for one of the timings.
goto bahn.de and specify wien westbahnhof as one end of the journey (not hauptbahnhof as it is not fully in service yet), Hamburg as the other, and erlangen hbf as an intermediate stop with your necessary stopover time (in your case 10 or 12 hours?).
If you then mess with the stopover and departure times you should come up with a good price.

Also, it may try and route you via Nürnberg on a busy ICE so if the prices arent great then you can speciy that leg of the journey as regional train only and that may help.

Failing that, look into busses if cash not comfort is your major criteria. After 80 years theres now intercity busses in germany offering the odd good deal and eurolines operate busses from Vienna to Nürnberg.

    hi

Ya i am leaving vienna on the Wed 11th Sept spending the night in erlangen.

On the Thurs 12th heading to hamburg.

€129.00 is the best I can get so far. Is that a reasonable price or would it work out cheaper if i booked closer to the dates

You're usually better off booking as early as possible.

I just had a quick look and came across the Quer Durchs Land ticket - http://www.bahn.de/p/view/angebot/regio/qdl.shtml?dbkanal_007=L01_S01_D001_KIN0001_at3-qdl_LZ01 If you're not planning on using ICE/IC trains then that would be a cheaper option. EDIT: Here's the English version: http://www.bahn.de/i/view/GBR/en/prices/germany/quer-durchs-land-ticket.shtml :)

no, the "cheap" seats are there and when they are gone they are gone.

If you specify a departure from Vienna west at 12:00 to Hamburg via Erlangen, and a break of 12 hours in Erlangen then you should get a price of 69euro. The only drawback is that you must leave Erlangen at 6am.
I cannot find any other combination or routing or trick up my slieve that gets that good of a price for a different train.

You can make that break longer and you pay €109 for a slightly later train that morning. To be honest, youre nearly as well go for that and you have 4 1/2 hours on the train to Hamburg then to catch up with any sleep!

also, you can specify stop overs on http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?newrequest=yes&protocol=http:&
and book all in one ticket, for Vienna (Wien) to Hamburg. It maybe cheaper

    Thanks for advice.
