They won't move until the owners pay them to, old tactic. Culture, innit?

They're fans of the discount retailers too I suppose.

    Bit extreme, but understandable.

The general public may feel threatened when there is probably at least 80 yuppies making home in a popular shopping centre.

    I hate this sorta thing.

Yeah but they have nowhere else to go. If we want them to stop traveling we need to provide them with a house.
    /PC off

If its private property throw them out, trespassing is trespassing and gets you arrested. Now Im going to make popcorn for the incoming ****storm.

Funny thing is, they do have somewhere to go. Its a fecking house.
They can more than afford rent at this stage. Why provide them with a house??

They are getting away with so much ****e its unbelievable.

Turf them out - They know what they are doing is wrong. They aren't stupid.

Give them 2 hours notice to vacate, then send in a bulldozer to clean them out, occupied or not.

They are just people on their holidays. No more. No less. They have come on holidays (presumably to coincide with the Mary from Dungloe festival) but not bothered to book a campsite or space for their campers.

They're holiday makers, no more, no less. And they're currently breaking the law.

Let this be a cautionary reminder to other retailers about the risks of running weekday discount deals on electric pink taffeta communion dresses.

While I don't agree that they are setting up shop on private property and threatening the occupies business, it's ludicrous to say its simply a matter of them going off and buying a house.

I imagine that those who haven't moved into a house at this stage don't want to. They are a nomadic culture and moving into a house destroys a large part of their identity.

I don't think it's right that we say to an indigenous minority that they must abandon their traditions and identity just because it isnt readibly compatabile with the modern way of life for the majority.

Especially as their relative educational and socio-economic disadvantage means they can't readily adapt to the majority's way of living.

Obviously though most people don't actually give a **** about them as human brings and as citizens so therefore calling for any sort of respect for their culture is a bit futile.

Not all are bad, There's some settled travellers who live in my estate. They keep to themselves and never cause trouble.

Although they race horses around the street at ungodly hours.

I wonder how many have stalls at the festival market day? If they have they should be banned from participating in the future and have their details sent to every town in the country so they're banned from ever small town market day.

It seems like it is the last acceptable prejudice

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Sadly there are a few more.

Most people make a point of noting that they're met, worked with or lived near people who are from the travelling community who are dead sound. It's all true.

However, sadly, the other type of stories tend to be equally true.

pity you weren't at cemetery Sunday in mullingar last weekend, you could have experienced their nomadic culture up close.... lovely people. I don't understand why they have such a bad rep?

Ah here we go. I am sorry but if I rocked up to your house and parked by 100,000 euro camper-van in your drive for a few days you will rightly be annoyed, ring the Gardai and get me removed by force. I can't understand why we coy to such behaviour. What do they want anyway? A few free house?

I reckon that you'd see them move pretty quick if a tow truck arrives and starts hauling away 132 D Hiaces.....

I think that's enough calls to murder a group of people for one day. See you next week folks!
