Military markings

I was walking near Newcastle (Co Wicklow) airfield yesterday and saw a small plane in flight (some sort of Cessna-ish machine, I'm not good on small aircraft) with US Navy markings.

Is this likely to have been an active US military aircraft, or is it more likely to have been a private plane, and if the latter, is it legal for a private plane to fly with such markings?

    hi there
A Piper Cub in US Army markings is based at Newcastle and operators of ex-military aircraft usually have permission to wear the old colour scheme.
