Chinook in Galway?

    Hi all,

Does the Irish Air Corps own a Chinook?

Last night in North Galway around 12pm I heard what I could only describe as a washing machine gone wrong outside, I looked outside and saw a Chinook!

It was a fairly dark night but I could see both rotor blades spinning and the noise was very defening, It had red and white lights flashing but the image of the machine was obvious to see. It was flying very low.

I have never seen or heard anything like this before, the nearest plane in the SKy are normally high up flying to Knock.

So does the Irish Air Corps own one or have they borrowed one, or does this bird belong to someone else!

I hear what you saying and I read that thread, but I saw 2 blades on top, and thee sound of it was very different from the sound the 115 makes.

Ive even listened back to both birds on You Tube and the sound I heard matches a chinook.

there was a fly in into Birr Offaly yesterday, maybe its involved in that. the IAC were supposed to fly Charlie 253 into it at some stage but got tasked with an air ambulance lift instead. only the UK and USA use it and as far as i know only the USA has flown them in Irish air space - president obama's security.

The chinook has 6 blades the S-92 has 4 for a start. There are no Chinooks in the south at the moment and certainly none flying at night in the west. What you saw was the IRCG S-92. All helis that size can sound the same depending on what they are doing and the power being pulled and blade slap can definitely cause it to sound like a wokka.

Guys it was not Rescue 115 it was Rescue 118 from Sligo it landed at Galway Hospital at 12.15am, Rescue 115 landed in Limerick Hospital, Rescue 118 was in again at 4am, the S92 rotor noise can be heard for miles away before you see it it has a very loud blade noise being such a fast helicopter. You only saw two blades because two are painted and the other two are not for visual ref. the lights you describe are the S92 large red lights and white lights.

Casa 253 did in fact make two passes over Birr airfield yesterday, before routing back to BAL. There was also an Aer Corps Cessna 172 (206) at the show.

Irish Air Corps CASA "Charlie253" was top cover for Rescue115 last night, Rescue118 came into UCHG twice last night.

    No you didn't.

You saw RESCUE118. EI-ICA is the duty S92 Sikorsky up at Sligo for now. EI-ICR is RESCUE115. EI-ICU is down in Waterford. Havent seen EI-ICG for a while at UCH Galway.

The same question was asked mid April albeit for a different part of the country.
