Crossover / SUV Options

    Hi all,

Have been going blind looking on Carzone, Cars Ireland etc. at different SUV's / Crossovers. Think I've narrowed it down to the following list. Budget is in or around 15k and I'd rather not pay 1,200 a year in tax so ideally it would need to be a Diesel if it's a 2+L:

    X-Trail
    Sportage
    Santa Fe
    Tucson

Any thoughts on this list? Anything I've left out that I should consider? All suggestions welcome.

How about a Mitsubshi Outlander? drove one for a few months and absolutely loved it.

Just throwing it out there but you could get a new Dacia Duster Crossover for not a whole pile more.

Forester and XC-70 could be contenders too.

Forester is the pick of the bunch. Out performs everything you've shortlisted on road and off road. Solidly built, good handling, great AWD system, can be got for little money as people are afraid of 2.0L petrols in an AWD car....a lot less than €15K with lots left over for the extra you might pay in motor tax.

The 4 you've mentioned are large, cumbersome, not frugal, don't handle well and don't perform on or off road well. The forester has great car like handling abilities and is really adept in conditions far less than ideal. they also have a "low" range with about a 15% reduction in gearing if you need it. They probably have a better wading depth than the vehicles you've mentioned too.

I'd rate the Forester over the XC70. The XC has more prestige if that matters. Audi All Roads can probably be had for similar money, albeit with higher tax bills.

The Honda HRV is also fairly good option if you plan any off road stuff. Being a Honda, might be a bit more expensive?

Agree completely but its certainly not frugal making it expensive to run.

On top of all that does OP actually want a 4 wheel drive? Most vehicles listed a 2 wheel drive.

I like the look of the Forester alright. Don't seem to be to many of them around in Dublin though that are 2L and under 100k miles.

Any opinions on the Honda CRV?

Don't necessarily need 4WD - just looking for high seating position and don't want a people carrier (we have one of those already :))

I'm moving from a '99 Honda Accord - so anything newer than a '07 would be a luxury!

So you don't need x4 wheel drive, then steer away from it (no pun intended), as the running costs are much higher than x2 wheel drive.

The Honda CR-V, in it's <2006 models was available in x2 wheel drive. However not so the 2007 - 2012 model, which I drive.

Mine's a 2007, 2.2 diesel, manual, and for the record, in 6 years ownership from new, and 140,000kms, apart from regular servicing (essential for emmisions), tyres (3 sets), wiper blades, brake pads (only once), I only ever had to replace the front wiper motor. (BTW, I got that from a breakers for €100, as opposed to Honda's cruel €500 new !!!) So, my CR-V has been ultra reliable, and the only gripe I have is the yearly road tax now €920, which I cannot blame on Honda. (2008 models and later only pay €600 or so) I reckon I get 40 - 45 mpg (old skool !), and can testify to over 1000km from a full tank, as she will keep going past the "zero range" for up to 30kms (done that recently, when I ran out on the M1)

2007 CR-Vs are as little as €11,750, but get the top spec if you can afford it, leather, reverse camera, Sat-Nav etc, really worth the comfort. A great car for little money...

Thanks QDM. It's a while since I've been in the market for a car - so from a mileage perspective on the CRV - at what level should I stay away? 50k, 75k, higher? This all assumes a full service history etc. which I wouldn't buy without anyway.

It might look funny, but it's a nicer drive than anything on your original list. :)

    No worries.

If you are narrowing yourself to a Nissan vs 3 x Hyundais
    why not consider a Qashqai.

Drove a Qashqai on holiday for 10 days - not particularly impressed. Interested in the Honda CRV too.

    Hi Plates,

Well, I'm no expert or a dealer, I can only talk about my experience.

My CR-V has been really reliable. I had it serviced by Honda for the first 3 years, to keep the warranty up. Since that, a local Kia dealer looks after it, as I know the head mechanic, and there's been absolutely nothing gone wrong ! So fingers crossed I will keep her a while yet, not just because she's been reliable, but the asking price of €45k for a new one is way out of my reach now.

    Pro's:
    • Superb driving position, heated leather comfort (driver). Light steering (my wife loves driving it), easy gearbox too.
    • Decent economy for a x4 wheel drive, regularly get 800-900km to a tank. I use 6th gear, and cruise control a lot.
    • Brilliant in the snow, intelligent x4 wheel drive, second/third gear, unstoppable. (never been off road though!)
    • Monster stereo sounds (under seat bass bins!), if you need it.
    • Bluetooth phone is awesome, voice control too.
    • Fully fold down rear seats, huge storage.
    • Brilliant reversing camera, and parking sensors, no excuses!
    • After 140,000km, the finish is still perfect inside. Outside, a few dings, but nothing you wouldn't get anyway.
    Cons:
    • Road tax on a 2007, 2.2 engine, €920...yikes!
    • The Sat Nav is stone age, even in upgraded form.
...em...that's it...if you can get a "one owner" with a genuine service history, buy it...

    QDM.

Anyone have opinion / experience with the Hyundai Tucson?

As much as I like the look of the CRV - the price difference between similar spec CRV's and Tucsons is significant. Two examples below:

    2008 CRV / 1.9 Petrol / 1 owner / 63k KM / €18k

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Honda/CR-V/ESL-5DR-/37013728513540540/advert?channel=CARS

    2009 Tucson / 1.9 Petrol / 1 owner / 50k KM / €12k

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Hyundai/Tucson/1-OWNER-/36613751721762180/advert?channel=CARS

Is there really €6k more value in the CRV or is it just the way the two different dealers are pricing their cars?

As far as I know in 2011 Mitsubishi were only giving a 3 year warranty on the Asx.
