Using the iPod as storage

I have a Canon camera with 32Gb of photos and video used up on the SD drive. For security (if it's robbed, our photos are gone) and practical reasons (I need the space) i need to transfer it asap.

I brought an iPad and an iPod with me (i'm on holidays). I also brought a connector to transfer from the sd drive to an iPod/iPad. I have already transferred the maximum number of photos allowable to the iPad. However, I have 124Gb free still in my iPod. I want to use that space now for the first time. I do not want to lose the 6Gb of music which is on my iPod, which itself is synced to my laptop at home. I'm wary of the entire syncing business because I don't want to overwrite things.

So, how do I use the SD-iPod connector to save everything from my SD drive to my iPod and transfer them all to my laptop when I get home, without losing my existing music on the iPod?

    Thanks.
