Driving "something" for 3 months for around €2K

    Hi Folks,

I was looking for the bangernomics thread but I couldn't see it at a glance so hoping you're able to give me a bit of advice.

I have a '06 Focus ST that is currently having it's oil filter housing replaced. Once I get it back I'm going to enjoy it for another week or two and then sell it off, reluctantly.

The reason for this is, come december I'm moving back abroad. I want to sell my car now and have transport for the remaining 3 months (give or take depending on how long it takes to sell my car).

What's your suggestions? buy a banger and drive it for 3 months and hope no issues arise and sell it off again after 3 months? or are there options to do long term rental or such? Which I assume would result in less maintenance costs etc etc.

    Opinion/suggestions welcome!

Quick Edit: I'm thinking I can make 2K available for the next few months of transport. The 2k is based on having had a offer from a "cash 4 cars" place of 4.000 euro for my car vs being able to get around 6.000 in private sale (give or take a few bob). So if I'm in a situation in november where I HAVE to sell my car I'll end up taking a 2K loss if I go the cash 4 cars route.

Just a little out of the box thinking here - do you need a car for that time frame? Might it be cheaper to get taxis to and from where you'd need to go? Obv. if you're living out in the boonies or somewhere that makes public transport / taxis prohibitively expensive then yes you do, but if you're urban based, perhaps you don't need to go to the bother of having to buy and sell a banger?

It's a fair point and I've looked into it. But unfortunately I work in the west of dublin and live outside of dublin a bit up north and for some inexplicable reason dublin bus has not yet seen the wisdom in bypassing the city centre for this route so I'd be looking at 2hours+ travel time every day by bus. A fate I'd like to avoid.

Forget the cash for cars thing sell your car privatly as that 2k should be lining your pocket and not someone else's.

Then buy a good bangernomics car for under 1k with as close to a full test as possible. when it comes time to sell it in three months time it will still have a good bit of test on it and will be easier to sell on as a result. Aim for a popular car with Irish consumers e.g A Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic as you will have no trouble selling them before you hope on a plane.

Yeah in all honesty that's what I'm leaning towards. It's just the hassle of it that's bugging me. But speaking to one of them cash for car chaps the thought of them picking up my car, driving it to their lot and instantly putting a 2k mark up on it without having to put any repairs or effort into it or even NCT it. It does bug me tremendously.

anyway cheers for the advice. I'll keep an eye on the bangernomics thread.

Right here's what I'd do, once your car is fixed, put it up with a very detailed ad and price it accordingly even if you think you might be asking a little much, you can always drop the price. If it's priced correctly for the market and the ad is decent then it will shift.

Forget the Taxi idea, you'll spend all that money and have nothing to show for it except paper receipts, invest in a sub €1k car and all going well you should make your money back on it.

The bangernomics thread is around somewhere I'd be starting with that, again look for something that's good value and will still be desirable in three months time, a boring crappy Toyota would do just the trick, buy something simple as well, no major electronics, no auto boxes or any of that sort of stuff, the more basic the better - less to go wrong!

Once you sell your own yoke, you can put that money in the bank safely and buy your banger. Then just transfer your insurance over, I wouldn't bother NCT'ing it unless you think it will pass easily and then ''tax'' it. :pac:

Honestly that's how I'd go about it - as efficiently and cheaply as possible, finally remember if you buy something for cheap enough you may even make money on it with a good clean and some DIY jobs if that's your thing! :D

OP, unless you are giving away or have a buyer lined up then the Focus ST may take the majority of the 3 months to sell it so you might not need to buy another car. If you do get lucky then a sub €1k runabout is the way to go. €2k is too much imo to spend on a car that you only plan to have for 3 months.

Actually that's a great point. I've been thinking in terms of "I put it on donedeals and it's gone" but this type of car it's a fair chance it might take a while.

thanks for the opinions chaps. I'll probably go the banger route for a few months/weeks depending on how quickly I can sell.
