Thinking of buying 2010 Corolla

    Hi guys,

So I'm thinking of getting Toyota Corolla 2010, 1.4l petrol €12,000

I've seen the car, test drove it, it all looks beautiful and drives perfectly, but the one thing that bothers me is its mileage - 100k km. It's quite a lot for a 2,5 years old car. My friends are telling me that it doesn't really matter it's that high as in two years it could only be done on motorway, so that's not a big deal.

The reason I'm looking at this particular one is because it is Luna version (a lot of Terra's around with small mileages, but Terra is very poorly equipped, doesn't even have the Air Con so no thanks), it seems to be very well maintained and the price is ok, also it's from Toyota dealer and they give 12 months warranty.

    What do you think??

Tbh, you need to drive other models of cars for perspective.
The 1.4 petrol corolla has relatively massive tax, the body is too heavy for the engine, interior space is nowhere as big as you'd think from how big the body is. Seating position is too low. Also its not a current model anymore.

I really think you can do so much better for the money. Other cars that are in the same tax band or lower.

    Thanks for the reply.

I know the tax isn't too low, but that's fine. I don't want a diesel as I only do about 6-7k km a year, and my daily journeys to work are about 4km one way. As for the petrol engine on the new tax bracket - most of them are that high unfortunately.

I have also driven Golf V 2008 1.4l, Golf VI 2009 1.4l, Civic 2010 1.4l, Auris 2010 1.4l, Focus 2010 1.6l... I really like corolla, and the no 1 reason I want it, is its reliability. I'm looking for a car for at least 5 years and I don't want any problems

You'd get a 1.8 civic saloon for the same tax which is likely to be more reliable than the corolla.
    Or a hatchback 1.8 that's €390 tax.

    Thanks Colm,

I'd love Honda, but Honda's 1.8l insurance is quite high, I was thinking about 1.4l tops - anything you would recommend with max 1.4l engine?

Have you priced the insurance? Mine isn't high.

Well I was driving 1.4l Golf and it was €520/year, switched to 1.8l Accord and suddenly it's €1100/year, so I imagine 2010 Civic won't be any cheaper

Get a price either way. The age of the vehicle etc may have been a factor.
    Also shop around between insurers.

    €12k for a 1.4 Corolla? Jesus wept....

I'd go off and look at a few other motors OP, in general Honda's do reliability just as well as Toyota but in a far better all round package with respect to just about everything. :)

You say your no1 priority is reliabilty. That might of been the trump card of Toyotas Corollas of old. The model you are looking at though along with the Auris represented a huge drop in quality.

The reliabilty in them is nothing special. Things like the gearbox and electric power steering can give trouble in them. Now im not saying that they're a bad car it's just that their competitors now do everything better including reliabilty.

Something like a Kia Cee'd, Hyundai I30 or the previously mentioned Civic are all better cars than those Corollas imo and it's one of them id be aiming for.
