Lightning damage

Twice in the last 6 years I've had an issue of minor lightning damage in my home, where it appears that a surge has come in through the phone line.
The first time blew chips off an internal modem, and the recent time disabled my netopia router.
I have been told that there should be some sort of protection at the pole that should protect against such surges. Is this true? Is there anything I should do myself?
It is impractical to disconnect everything every time we go out.
