Define "broken". If the hard disk drive is not damaged, it is fairley easy to recover your files: all you need id a SATA (or IDE) to USB adapter, remove the HDD from the laptop and hook it up to another computer.

If the hard disk drive has been physically damaged, you may require the service of a data recovery professional, which can be quite expensive.

I'm pretty sure the hard drive is the problem... Will have to look into the data recovery specialist..... How expensive are we talking?

So can you stilll boot the laptop? From a Linux Live CD for example. Is the hard disk drive still accessible?

That again depends on the severity of the damage... starting at a few hundred up to a coupla thousand yoyos. Most data recovery services will quote you first.

ddrescue + photorec should do if the drive isn't totally dead

and a much better option than having idiots using software that writes to the drive

replacing drive motherboards is hit and miss , unless you have a very specific problem

anyone charging only a few hundred isn't doing much that you couldn't do at home, need to be the guts of a grand before you are talking clean room to bypass faulty heads

if the drive has been dropped it might be toast if the platter has shattered

Moral of the story - there are many free services you can upload photos to. And all hard drives will die.

    dropbox
microsoft skydrive (soon to be renamed)
    mozy
    google

And where exactly do these "services" store your data? That's right, on hard disk drives... even the NSA swears by HDDs. :D

Moral of the story. backup is always cheaper than data recovery. ;)

Like you say they use drives if one fails it's not a problem

it's like an airplane in the middle of the ocean, if an engine fails and you've only one engine ...
