Not a thread about a Buzzcocks song.. but any bands you ever wonder what became of? One or two I have been listening to recently

Morning Runner - one cracking debut, and that was it from them
Fiery Furnaces - great debut but sortof disappeared after that
    Joy Zipper
    Hal

W.H.T. . . . Director - Dublin band who released one album and never surfaced again for a second one.
The Thrills; even though I was not a fan at all, it was very strange how they were everywhere at one stage and then never heard of again.

Director did release a second album

Not knowing what happened to certain bands and artists can sometimes hinge on what attention you pay to the music media.

The Fiery Furnaces put out seven albums since their debut before going on hiatus in 2011. The Thrills released two more albums since their debut, one got initial media attention with the single 'What Ever Happened To Corey Haim' getting decent radio play and the other was released to little fanfare.

The Thrills are on hiatus, but I always saw them as sort of a one-hit wonder type of band. One Horse Town is the only song of theirs I ever heard on pop radio.

Sinead Lohan was meant to release an album in 2007, but her producer still claims its on its way, haven't heard of her do any gigs besides the Woman's Heart anniversary tour.

'Big Sur' was just as big as 'One Horse Town', certainly not one-hit wonders.

Cold war Kids is another one that springs to mind. It was probably more a rhetorical question originally but there again maybe I don't access as much music media as I used to.

'Big Sur' was just as big as 'One Horse Town', certainly not one-hit wonders.

Both number 1 singles in Ireland and I think Santa Cruz did as well as did their album. I taught their debut was one of the better album's of early 00's, they were hyped up NME as Bono, Slash, Paul Weller and Morrissey turned up to their gigs. I always felt their singer was pretty weak and they rush released that second album which lacked a lot of punch of their first album, it was critically and commercially underwhelming too. Although their third album was a slight return to form but after all the hype they never lived up to the hype in the UK. Released a greatest hit's set (not good for a band who only released three albums) and haven't been heard from since.

The Bravery- Loved that Debut album but released a slightly disappointing second album. Haven't heard anything from them since.

The D4- New Zealand rock group who rode the wave of indie hitting big time in Britain in 2001. Great album in 6Twenty and the song "Get Loose" but didn't hear anything from them after that.

Hal- Dublin band who had the same influences as the Thrills (Beach Boys/The Byrds) but had better singers and songs. A few songs were produced by Edwyn Collins, had their album released on Rough Trade and song Play The Hits played on MTV a few times. Released a great debut album but after that nothing. Pity that debut album was top notch.

The Zutons- Probably still well known to some cause of Valerie and the babe playing Sax, But after that third album they've faded away and their bass player has joined Noel Gallagher's touring band. Their first two albums are great the third a let down.

The Like- Three piece female group,Known to be the famous daughter's of Producer's, Record company owners and Pete Thomas Drummer of Elvis Costello, they were hyped up by NME (which new bands not) released a few good singles then a decent debut album and had a complete make over for their second album. Z Berg was one of the hottest lead women of the last few years.

My bad! Need to do my homework :/

Yeah, forgot about 'The Bravery' - their debut was promising (the video for Honest Mistake was pretty cool). And 'The Zutons' - after the media fanfare over Valerie, there wasn't much else said about them (*to wikipedia*).
Saw them live a few years go and they were decent enough :pac:

    Emanuel & The Fear

This came out about 3/4 years ago, and I thought they had great potential.
They had an album the following year, which this song didn't actually feature on. It was good without being great.

The Zutons were great the couple of times I saw them live. Really liked the first two records but seemed to implode on the back of a crappy 3rd and some interband issues.

As for Firey Furnaces... Matthew has released at least one solo record and Eleanor is or has just released her first which is supposed to be really good and getting a lot of attention stateside. off to see if its on Spotify in fact thanks for the reminder !

The Thrills had two decent albums, Let's Bottle Bohemia was a good second album in my opinion, didn't think the third was any good. I think they even made it onto The OC at one stage, most definitely not a one hit wonder anyway.

As other posters said, a lot of bands hyped up by NME especially around 2004 to 2006. A huge number of those alt/indie bands made it into the charts back then, one catchy single and then never heard of again.

Bands like CSS I completely lost track of, couldn't believe they had three more albums when I looked them up. Their first album wasn't too bad, just lost track of them because of the three year gap between the first and second album.

All I remember of The Bravery is that one good song and then the whole The Bravery vs. The Killers argument.

CSS just released a album a month or two back, got some horrid reviews. They seem to lost their way when their main songwriter left. Although I think their singer is probably more known for the opening song in the Film Drive, Nightcall. If at all. Their second album and Third are awful. I always felt they so hard wanted to go all pop and took out the quirky side they had.

The Bravery debut is a great album, still give a listen here and there. The Killers rivalry really killed them off, as Hot Fuss just sold and sold more the Bravery came off more and more bitter.

I have to give Let's Bottle Bohemia another spin taught it was a disappointment after So much for the city. I like the third album, seems it's only me.

I saw them live at Oxygen, I think having a hot female sax player certainly helped them pull a large male crowd that day :P. I think Who Killed the Zutons? is a pretty good debut album and the second album's saving grace was Valerie but many see that as an Amy Winehouse song now anyway. That third album was rather Disappointing.

The Datsun's are another band who have slipped off the radar after such a storming debut. They got John Paul Jones (of Led Zepplin) to produce their second album

Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong, NME hyped them up and then the band pulled their debut album from it's release date. Not a single thing heard from them after. NME had them on their front cover three or four times.

Glasvegas - Another hyped band from the NME, released a good debut album and an awful second. Haven't heard a thing since. Plus went to the Oasis gig at Slane and they were supporting. Never seen a band zap the energy from the crowd like these guys.

the Klaxons- Mercury award winning band who did a well received Debut album and took ages to release that second album which no one cared about. Probably more famous now for one of them been MR Keira Knightly.

Would like to see JJ72 get together again and do something.

They took massive strides on from their eponymous debut with 'I to Sky' in 2002 but sadly never got the backing of their label

The Rapture never really went anywhere, never thought they were good in the first place though.

Their first album Echoes is a class album. Second and third weren't up to much, another band who took ages to release a follow up album.

Their third album was recorded and set for release before being shelved. They released two singles from it and a handful of other tracks were eventually leaked. Still hasn't been officially released.

Yeah, the bits and pieces I heard from it weren't the best, very grainy

Interpol and The Vines - wonder what they're at these days. Also, The Kooks, The Wombats, Black Kids and Badly Drawn Boy.

The Vines released a fourth and fifth album over the last two years. Both good albums. Never Top that Debut album.

The Kooks released their third album last year. Seems there time has come and gone.

The Wombats released their second album two year ago.

Black kid's, this what it says on Wikipedia,
"They are currently writing songs for their second album. The band played new songs on their Mini-Tour along Florida as seen on their setlist. The new songs are possible related or at least contain the words 'Trippin', 'Smokes', 'Castles', 'Rude Boys' and 'Weird Hearts'. On a session for XPN2, Owen Holmes, their bassist, acting out as Gospel Music, his solo project, told that the band is still having fun together as friends and enjoying their spare time a little bit, but still, they are writing songs for their sophomore album. In April, their drummer, Kevin Snow, tweeted that "a second album is in the works, hoping we'll be finished soon."
In August 2013 the band started to tour again along Brazil and the East Coast on the United States. They played "Clocks" and "Wake Up", two new songs, and stated that the album they were recording in 2010 was scrapped off and they started recording again earlier in 2013. The new album will hopefully drop out in the Spring of 2014."

Amazing, it's taken them that long to record a second album. If they are known it's thank's to Fifa 09 and the remix of I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance with You. They didn't exactly set the charts alight with the first album. Unless they've written catchy number 1 singles on their new album, they been known as a one hit wonder.

I was not a fan tbh (over-hyped crappy pop rock) - and that song was always on NME
Reckon that's what happens to most of these 'one-to-watch' bands. They're awarded that title on the merit of one song, fail to have any decent follow-up tracks, are not sustainable (i.e. no-one goes to their gigs, buys their EPs or albums), and fade into the abyss. Tragic really :pac:

(Also, checked my music collection and I have the vines fourth one. Facepalm doesn't begin to describe  )

Interpol are on a hiatus I believe, lead singer Paul Banks released his debut album (under his real name) in 2012, t'was very good.

The Vines have had several albums out since they broke onto the scene but it's difficult for them as their singer can't tour due to his autism.

Interpol have been in the studio lately recording some new stuff.

Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong pretty much became TOY, who are great if a bit Horrors light. Kopter is a fantastic song!

I've noticed with a lot of US bands that while they seem to 'disappear', they still do well in their home city/state/region (often being of similar/greater size and population to UK/Ireland)
