Model No. TL-WA850RE Not as simple to set up as it says on the box. Need to update firmware. Any idea how to do this. I downloaded updates from tplink website but dont know how to connect range extender to PC

You'll need a computer/laptop with a wireless network controller.

The rest is all in the manual (p. 30, 31).
