Gas Hob and Cooker installation.

    Hi.

Just bought a Gas hob and built in (gas) cooker from Currys'.

I was informed up front that the replacement would have to be done that is RGI certified and would cost €130 for the work.

My wife went out pay for the appliances. When they were calculating the final bill they then said that as we were buying 2 Gas appliances , we would therefore need to pay 2 installation fee's.
My wife called me and I said thast didn't sound right, to challenge it and walk away from the sale if they insisted on 2 installation fee's. (For the one job IMO).

The upshot was that when my wife challenged it with the store manager , he wasnt too sure, made a few phone calls after which he said he still could not get a definitive answer so would do the installation for the 2nd appliance at half price.

My wife agreed and paid on my Card.

Anyone know what the actual cost for the installation should be in this situation? I appreciate that Curry's are outsourcing the work but I would not expect to pay two installation fee's for what I view as one job.

    Thanks.

They were trying it on, you fought back on one front but still fell for one of their tricks which was that you seem to assume that you have to accept the installation service offered by them, you do not.

You can get any RGI installer to do the work, it doesn't have to be someone hired through the retailer. If the installation service was paid for through their retail systems then it's virtually certain that they are getting a large commission from the installer. If I was you I would have told them to get stuffed and I'd get my own guy.

But you're wrong to say that it's only one installation, it's two completely separate installations if the hob and cooker are distinct and separate units. They will each need to be connected to the gas and that is two installations though as there's only one callout, 1.5x is probably a fair charge.

    Hi there,

I just thought it was easier to get the guys who are delivering the units to do the installations when they are there rather than have the stuff lying around waiting to be installed; then who takes away the old equipment? I know I'm paying a mark up as they are outsourcing but I'm willing to do that to get the work done seamlessly.

I suppose the main issue I had (have) is that were being asked to pay effectively 2 call outs.

    Thanks for the input...

Fair point, I forgot about the issue of removing the old units. When I was getting a new electric oven a couple of years ago, I had the old one disconnected and sitting on the floor when the delivery truck arrived so they were able to take it away there and then. I wouldn't have been able to do that with a gas unit.

Currys actually have their own installers who are RGI qualified..their work is checked by both RGI and the companies technical auditors. it is indeed two separate jobs because both appliances need connecting €195 to deliver, install and take away all old appliances and rubbish seems fair to me

I agree that it is two separate jobs, but there is only one call-out involved so 1 1/2 installs cost sounds reasonable.

    Hi annoyedatthree,

Got the units in and installed by the Guys from Curry's.

I cant fault anything with regard to the work that was done.

The guys called me 30 minutes in advance to make sure I was there. It was also good from my POV as I knew when to expect them.
    The work was done quickly.
They took away all the Old units (+ dishwasher) and all the cardboard that the new equipment came in.
The didnt plumb in the Dishwasher but gave me good advice on some plumbing aspects and some things NOT to do.

All in all was well worth the €195 paid..
If you need anything else , PM me...

Still sounds like a bit of a rip-off to me. If a retailer is supplying items that you MUST get an RGI installer to fit, then the price should reflect delivery and fitting, not to land another €130 for a 10 min job on top of what you pay for the goods.

had my cooker installed and gotta say I am totally chuffed..they let me know half hour before they came and they did a lovely job on the cooker ..mine had to be converted to use with bottled gas so they had to take the cooker apart to change the jets in the grill and oven ..and no extra charge..a neighbour of mine was told by a local gas man it would be another €100 to convert her cooker and that was after 2 plumbers walked away clearly not understanding how to convert her cooker..so overall I am really happy:D

so if you buy a new turbo for your car are you being ripped off by having to get a mechanic to fit it:confused: 10 minute job...another cowboy me thinks

So who did it and what did it cost ?

    €100 conversion charge

The conversion kit normally comes with the cooker, and your looking around €80/100 for converting it and supplying a Cert, presuming installation is to regs.
