Power Steering Problem

    Hi guys,
Had a problem with my power steering today on my 2006 1.4 d4d corolla hatchback.
In the middle of a three point turn my power steering died and the P/S light lit up on the dash. I pulled in to the side of the road, popped the bonnet and looked under the car but could see nothing wrong.
I proceeded to drive 36km of the way home and stopped for diesel in a local filling station.
I restarted the car before I filled it and the power steering was working again.
It worked for the final 10km home perfectly.
Have ye any ideas as to what could be wrong here?
    Thanks,
    Tommy

Have you check the power steering fluid?

To the best of my knowledge a 2006 Toyota Corolla has electronic power steering. I could be wrong but I couldn't find any power steering reservoir under the bonnet.

Could be right, but in my car it was tuck right under bulk head, they tryed to hide it.

That model Corolla does indeed have electric power steering. Tbh I've never seen one of these giving problems with the power steering. Early example of the newer 07 on models did give issues though with the electric power steering.

Took it for a quick spin today with lots of sharp turns and did a few three point turns too but the power steering remained perfect :)
Any ideas what could have caused this though?
There was no signs/sounds of any problem occurring the first time this happened :/

All too common problem with Toyota electric power steering.

The relays in the control unit give problems, replacing the control unit behind the dash is the Toyota solution. The unit costs about 5 to 6 hundred.

You may find a ECU repair centre that can do a repair when and if it happens again.

It's the newer 07 on model that gave those issues. I've never seen the op's model corolla with power steering issues.

Covered about 80 km since the problem without the issue reoccurring :)
Have a 175 km trip this evening so if it doesn't happen again I'll just say it was a once off :)
As a side note, should I look into this? http://www.rte.ie/news/2012/1114/345572-toyota-recall/
Never got a letter about it

Get it plugged into diagnostic , there will be a fault code logged in the system.

There more than likely won't be any code because the steering has started working again and the light has gone out.

Yes, I see your point. Just wondering if the diesel model @ 06 might have had the later system on account of the heavier diesel engine.

I have never seen one to go while driving, usually working fine until stopped and then on a restart, nothing.

Have also seen this on 08 model Auris and Yaris.

I don't see your point about them changing the eps just because of the 1.4 d4d engine being added it wouldn't make any difference and wouldn't of been cost effective. Sure didn't the same model have the heavier 2.0d4d engine when it was introduced in 2002 and the eps in them was fine.

The Auris is based on the 07 new model corolla and is also known to give eps issues.

There will be history codes in it , they possible wont show up on other diagnostic tools but they will on the Toyota one, I've dealt with theses before.

2007 Corolla (petrol) - lost all P/steering today.

Is Toyota covering that (hard to imagine, but...), based on what I saw in earlier notes around recalls. I received none, and have the car since new.

    Thanks.

    +1

Check battery -EPS takes huge power draw on battery, if battery is not up to it, EPS will switch off.

hopefully it's not as bad as the bmw z4 electric steering. that went on mine a few months ago and cost 2500 euros to replace

Car was lifted (could not steer it at all) to the local Galway Toyota garage & they've indicated a rough quote of €700

I'm looking to see if there's any leeway from Toyota on this... to me, it's a safety issue, as my wife was unable to control it, so it just had to be stopped there & then. And with two grandkids onboard, if the location had been different... what's frightening was how fast it occurred, no tell-tale signs to allow you to pull it in.
