Retirement of Consultant

One of the consultants I have been seeing for the last 20 or so years will soon be retiring and I was wondering what usually happens to long term patients when this happens? Is it up to me to find someone or will he put me in touch with another specialist.
It's not a big deal in that medically there isn't a great deal he can do for me anymore but I still need someone to attend for monitoring and in the event of unforeseen problems.

It depends on the consultant. Sometimes they will refer all their patients to a similar consultant close by or their replacement will take up the patients. In my own experience, I was told to go back to my GP and get referred to a new consultant.

Next time I see him I think I'll just have to be upfront and ask him what happens when he does retire, as it stands he is only seeing private patients and no longer does surgery so it can't be long.
What happens with regard to medical records. Over the last 20 years and 3 fairly major operations there's quite alot to my case so would he pass this on to someone else on my behalf. As far as I know he doesn't keep computerised records so that's going to be difficult!
