I have high hopes for 4G but like GBCULLEN said things are quite these days, I haven't herd anything on progress recently. 4G seems to be the only way people living in rural areas will get a decent speed and hopfully push other wireless providers to increase data rates too. Does anyone know if Three or any other providers gave a time frame for 4G roll out to rural areas around Ireland. I presume areas like Dublin and cork will come first but it would be nice if they rolled out quickly to the rest of the country.

Article in the Indo last Sunday on this by Adrain Weckler
THE race to be Ireland's first mobile 4G operator looks set to be decided between Vodafone and Meteor, according to senior telecoms figures.

Both networks will launch in late September or early October, according to the executives.

All four networks have pledged to launch high-speed 4G mobile services this year. However, it has also emerged that O2 may not now launch its 4G services until 2014.

"In light of the recent acquisition with Hutchison Whampoa [3 Ireland], we're not in a position to currently specify a launch date for our 4G services," said Fergal McCann, head of networks at O2 Ireland.

Mr McCann said that the company was continuing its 4G trials in Dublin, Cork and Galway.

3 Ireland has said it will launch sometime between October and December.

Vodafone is set to launch its offering in Kilkenny, with Dublin and other cities to follow soon after. Meteor is currently conducting final trials in Dublin, Athlone, Carlow and parts of Galway.

the only two operators who look likely to launch 4G services either next month or in October are Vodafone and Meteor (Eircom). 3 Ireland will follow soon after that, while O2 may not now launch until as late as Easter 2014.

Both Vodafone and Meteor have decided to spread their launch beyond the confines of Dublin, for a differing strategic reasons. Vodafone's launch – pegged for September but which may now slip into October – will kick off in Kilkenny, with Dublin and other cities to follow shortly after. Meteor (Eircom) is hopeful of a September launch but may see its plans moved to October. It is currently conducting final trials in Dublin, Athlone, Carlow and Clifden, Galway City.

3 Ireland is expected to launch in the cities first. O2's launch has been put on hold until its €850m acquisition by 3 Ireland is confirmed by the Competition Authority. This could drag out into 2014, meaning a significant gap in O2 customers seeing 4G services on their smartphones.

This is my only hope for broadband, living out in the countryside...

Ripplecom are cutting me off, without my consent, and have my emails ignored... so 4G's probably my next solution once it's available.

Just hope with the increased bandwidth capability, that they'd raise the data cap. from the generic 15-30GB ["Heavy User" plans] to something more manageable, like 70-150GB.

Don't hold your breath, anyway the 4g providers have to reach 80% of population coverage so like most on here(country dwellers) we may not even get 4g:(

Eircom said users of its network can expect peak download speeds of between 20 and 25Mbps, which is up to ten times faster than 3G services typically offer.

Will it be any improvment for non-urban dwellers

Still playing catch-up with the likes of Korea and even Vietnam , and why can all the operators not co-operate to give the consumer a REAL service instead of playing the 'mine's better than yours' game

Anybody try it yet for speed ?

    No.

And as far as I can tell its just a gimmick to make people go over the cap and get charged through the nose for going over their cap.
