My car failed it's NCT today. It's a 2005 Mazda 3, 1.6 diesel, with about 160,000 km on it. The guy in the test centre wouldn't test the emissions because the engine was making a wierd noise. He said that the engine sounded like the bearings had gone in it, as it was making a strange ticking sound. Anyone any ideas on what…

Anyone any ideas on what fault this could be, and how much it would cost to fix?

if the bearings are gone its a rebuild or a new engine,either way it wont be cheap,if its ticking noise it could be something else but if its more of a knocking sound then it would suggest bearings,you need to bring it to a garage and get it diagnosed properly first,the tester probably did'nt want to rev it for the emissions and end up blowing the engine in the middle of the test centre.
