....could you do a runner to England for a year and declare yourself bankrupt to get out of it ? I hasten to add that I am not in this position. I just wondered about it earlier. Sorry if it's a stupid question

Bankruptcy wouldn't get rid of criminal charges - which you would get for being in contempt of repayment orders. Could they get an international warrant is the question.
