You might want to take out good life insurance. There are a lot of kidnappings of foreigners in that part of Nigeria and the Delta region. You need to weigh up the risks with the salary. The wife of the Osun State Speaker was kidnapped just last year.

My brother-in-law works there every now and again. He hates it. It's dangerous and corrupt as hell.

I've a brother in law who's been out there over 5 years. Not overly fond of the place but the money is excellent. He's in business dealing with local authorities mainly. Its safe enough, but most expats employ armed security because they're cheap and cut hastle. It's very different place culturally which takes adjustment and it is a third world country - go there open minded and you'll be fine

Brother is a Lecturer in a private university Abuja.

    Also had his own driver.

Within a few days the driver tried to tap him up for some money for an operation for a sick relative.

He now drives himself, but apparently that is an experience in itself.

Security is an issue and you have to be mindful of where you go.

Is that not an issue in its self though ? OP what kind of information is the company going to supply you with, will there be some orientation or mentor-ship ?

Will you be mixing with the locals or will you be confined to a camp or rig ?

Defiantly stress the open minded bit.

Have to, No. But it costs nothing and does make life easier!

Security and driver are a must, at least till you get over the shock and start to figure out the setup.

Corruption, you are coming from Ireland so that's nothing new.

Surprised to hear from a local engineer this morning that the Irish are generally respected and not considered racist compared to other nations, (maybe the please and thanks).
In Nigeria at the moment working, Port Harcourt in the south. Have worked here many times, a different world but have never had anything really bad happen.

I'm a fitter that had to come home from oz because my visa came to an end. I really need to leave Ireland to get a job and I am willing to go anywhere. But I need help and advice as I seem to be searching the internet in the wrong places

i know a lad who got the contract for a civils eng project over there, he arrived back a few months later n has stopped tendering for projects in nigeria!

had an uncle working over there years ago n the company paid them bribe money - literally everyone needed bribing, even going through customs at airport a few dollars was left under the bag. the money was savage n never heard about being unsafe off him
