Crippiling Stage Fright - Good 1st Gig?

I am funny around people once they get to know me. I am now trying to figure a way to channel this so that I can be funny to a room full strangers and I'm writing some observational material.

What would be a good (short) 1st gig for me to do? (Doesn't even have to be open-mic comedy, anything that you think would help to build confidence?). I have a car and I'm passionate about comedy so willing to drive..

Thanks for any and all feedback :)

    Where are you based?

Lots of people in Dublin start at the Battle of the Axe. It's a friendly night and they encourage new acts to get up so the crowd are mostly kind. They'll let you do 5-7 minutes.

battleoftheaxe@hotmail.com is the email address to contact Tony Ferns.

One thing I'd say is before you do it in front of a crowd record yourself doing your set (audio only - don't bother with video yet) and listen back to it. I was amazed how learned off everything sounded when I did it. It takes a bit of practice to sound like you're not reciting it but it certainly helps.

Did you find it hard listening to your own voice? I can't stand it, better get used to it I suppose :p

My job means I often have to listen to myself recorded so I'm well used to it but it's something you have to get used to if you're going to do stand-up.

It's a good idea to record every gig you do so you can listen back. You'd be surprised how easily you'll forget what bits did/didn't work. Having the audio to go back to will make sure your memory is not being too hard or overly kind to you.

Also listening back to your gigs will help you identify and eliminate any phrases you overuse. Things like "So basically..." "y'know..." etc.

    Glad you enjoyed it.

Welcome to the drug of stand-up..... once it gets its hooks in you it's so hard to quit!

Is Trevor Browne booking Anseo now?

Any other open mic-ey rooms about the greater Dublin area?

Trevor Browne has taken over Wednesday nights in Anseo recently alright.

I'm not actually sure of any nights besides The Battle that I'd class as open-mic nights that are running at the minute. There's always new places popping up. But most nights have open mic spots - Wicked Wolf in Blackrock seems to be picking up from what I've heard. I know of at least one act who got spotted there and asked onto the new comedy awards on RTE.

Buskers in Galway is very open to new people. Think Bad Ass Cafe is pretty open to new people. It's on Wednesday.

Cheers. I'll check out the Wicked Wolf and the Bad Ass so. By open mic I didn't necessarily mean open mic in the strictest sense of the term, but more a non-paid, low pressure room where you could try stuff out.

Check out Longshot too. It's a monthly gig in Sweeney's.

    Just to follow this up...

Is Longshot comedy still running? Also, does the Bad Ass have any updated contact info at all? A quick Google showed up the details for when it was on a Friday.

Sorry for all the questions! Any info greatly appreciated :)

I'm pretty sure Longshot is gone or least on hiatus. I know Badass is back on the go, but not sure 100 per cent who's running it. Rent-a-Comic on Facebook have lot of these details.

Longshot seems to have gone alright.

Bad Ass is now running three nights a week - Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

The guy who runs it is called Donnacha - here's the Facebook for them:
