Why so keen to buy a 14 year old banger?

I have a 14 year old car (no tax or NCT and needs some work) for sale on Adverts.ie. In the past couple of days I have had a number of calls from a person who didn't sound Irish or European telling me that they will buy it and that they couldn't collect it until Tuesday.

They pleaded with me not to sell it to anyone else. He's just after ringing me again asking me not to sell it as he will collect it on Tuesday. As a buyer he hasn't had many favourable comments on adverts.ie.

The car is nothing special so what's the attraction??? Are cars still being broken and engines sent away for use in other countries?

Is this legit and if the car is broken up how will I a cert of destruction.

I'm only going to get about €200 more than I would if i bring it to an ATF.

    Any thoughts?

Well I suppose I would be inclined to ask him for ID , proof of address, and make sure you do the log book correctly.
Maybe make him sign a receipt of sorts.

It's legit if he wants to fix it up or break it for parts but either way you won't get a certificate of destruction and under no circumstances hand him the registration cert. Send it to Shannon with his name and address which you verify by asking him to bring his driving licence.

And watch out for a dodgy draft, sometimes they double up on the scam by claiming that they made a mistake and got a draft for too much money so they ask you for the difference in cash, then when you find the draft is bad you're at the loss of the car and the cash.

Perhaps he intends using her as a Donor car for a more cherished motor.

Consider calling him and asking what his true intentions are as you've got other interested parties and you're just being considerate.

I don't see what the problem is? If he buys the car, signs the logbook and you post it off then he can do whatever he wants with the car.

The only issue I have with him is he is asking you to hold a car over the bank holiday (when there is a high chance of other people wanting to come look at it/buy it) without any kind of a deposit. I would never hold a car for anybody unless they had come to look at it and left a deposit.

Chances are its heading for the boat to Africa.

If he has the money(its real now) sell it and post off the log book.

Same as if you sold to Seamus, from down the road.

A mate of mine (he's Irish) buys loads of old Japanese cars (primarily Toyota saloons) dirt cheap and sells them on for a decent profit to this Nigerian lad he knows.

As far as I know the Nigerian lad then breaks them up and sends the engines only on to Africa. He can't get enough of them apparently and sends over containers full of engines. There must be serious money in it for him. Maybe they use the engines to power all sorts of stuff over there?

I never thought of the issue with the log books though. I'm sure my mate has it covered but I must mention it to him though....

WHATEVER he says, dont hand over the logbook - unless you want to be paying fines everyday for some untraceable nigerian.

If they are planning on exporting the car do you hand over the log book?

It used to be you could not import full cars in to africa, I knew a guy that would come over and strip lorry's and ship the parts over. Mabey its still the same?

No, they would need their own VLC in their own name to do this (export import), your VLC in your name would actually not be usable (well in any country with a working importation process).

Tbh VRC (or VLC, logbook, whatever you call it) in OP's name should be more than enough to register the car abroad.
If person buying is not resident in Ireland, there's no other way than hand over the logbook.

Well what does "should be" mean? Ive been looking into Importing cars into a few places over the last year, all were very clear the Registration documents need to be in the name of the Importer. They dont care if said person isnt a Resident in some other country, thats not their problem at all.

What's so hard to understand? It's quite likely he can't buy the car until Tuesday, because all banks are closed until then and he can't get hold of his money until then.

There is a savage market out there on donedeal for cars with issues selling at only a few hundred above scrap value BTW. I'm surprised you weren't inundated with calls. It must be the slow & silly season. Wait till you put a car like yours up in September :)

Sorry but incorrect: if exporting you must hand over VLC.

Wrong again. DVLA clearly state on the V5C that it must be handed to exporter too...

Can you give example of country which would require a registration document of foreign car to be in name of person importing the car into that country?

Just to let ye know - they guy who made an offer and pleaded with me not to sell the car to anyone else - he never showed up so the car was sent to a legit scrap yard and I got a COD. The proposed purchaser has now got yet another negative review on adverts.ie.

By the way for those interested I got €100.

I still reckon he wanted the logbook for some nefarious reason.

I'd say it was genuine , I've heard of a number of old jap cars being stolen for export. Seem to be mad for them in Africa.
