Driving Test / Permit Question

    Hi.

I had this posted elsewhere but just got notified of the learning to drive section.

Would anyone know if I apply for a driver test today (for the Dublin Finglas Centre) when I'll be able to schedule a test for.

Basically, I have to apply for a learner permit. on the website it says I'll have to complete the 12 EDT lessons which will take about 5 - 6 months to complete. However I can't apply for my permit unless I have a date scheduled for my test. This is because it will be my third permit. I got one initially, then another intending to learn but never got around to it.

So now why do I have to pay €85 for the test, which they won't allow me to take without doing the 12 lessons so that I can apply for my permit.

It's a ridiculous roundabout situation. Can anyone give me advice on this?

AFAIK you don't need to worry about EDI unless your applying for your first learner permit.

You need to renew your existing learner permit then apply for the test.

But I need to have a date scheduled for a test. It's a requirement for the learner permit. But if I can't get a date for a few months away there's no way I'd pass it. That'd be my main worry, either way it's €85 I don't want to spend on a test that I have no chance of passing. Any other ideas or info appreciated.

I renewed my second learner permit recently and it wasn't a requirement to have the test scheduled maybe the rules are different for your third learner permit?

Yeah it's for your third or later that you need to have a test date to show them.

Ok, I re-read the terms on the application again. It seems I won't need to do the EDL lessons as I first applied for a permit before 2011. So I'll have to go ahead and book the test, then get the permit applied for, and give the test a go whatever the latest date I can do it will be.

Still seems a bit odd but not having to do EDL is a bit better.

    Thanks for help.

You can postpone your test twice for free once you give at least 10 days notice

So when you get your date you can knock it back and get stuck into driving

Normally the reply from driver testing will be enough to allow permit renewal
