Just received a new medical card in the post, current one is vaild til October 2013 and the new one is valid to October 2014.

Do they just renew them automatically as last time I had to jump through hoops to have it renewed?

Did you get a letter from the HSE asking have your circumstances changed.

I got a one year renewal back in April too with no forms/letters, think quite a few others have too. They seemed to just do some kind of auto-renew this year. No idea why.

Got medical card in the door but no renewal form was sent. The thing is my circumstances have changed in the last while, my partner has moved back in after a long time and he works. I know that I would no longer be entitled to a card. I was not going to reapply when I received renewal. Now I am so afraid to send back card in case they look for information and realise I have been living with my partner since before renewal date. I'm scared and very worried. Will I be sent to jail.

    Help

Highly unlikely to be sent to jail! The best thing to do is report your change of circumstances immediately. If your income or family circumstances change you must inform Client Registration Unit, P.O. Box 11745, Dublin 11, or contact them at LoCall 1890 252 919. Let the review process then take place - they can send you a review letter/form. You mention that with your partner's income you would no longer qualify for the card but remember that the income limits for qualifying for a GP visit card are 50% higher than for a medical card and in hardship cases (where an ongoing medical condition means a lot of medication regularly and even though household income is high enough to cover it but it would cause hardship etc) you can sometimes retain the medical card. If you don't qualify for either the Medical or GP card, you can still apply separately for the Drugs Repayment Scheme. Don't let worry about having used the card beyond when you thought you should stop you from going through the review process properly and just deal with it step by step. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/health/entitlement_to_health_services/medical_card.html

I rang them a couple of years ago to let them know my circumstances had changed and that I believed I no longer qualified.

I was basically told that I did not have to do anything about it until my card came up for renewal.

That surprised me and I still tend to worry about it.
