What can I expect? very leafy shiny dark green Italian ryegrass nearly looks something you would feed to a rabbit.

Will the bales be very soft and saggy and unattractive to potential buyers???

Could hay be made out of such grass weather permitting of course.

Has a good sprinkling of wild oats as the pic shows.

get that b*****d of a wild oat out of my eye line, hate em. You will have very attractive bales to someone that knows what they are buying once baled dry.

hay would have being possible last month :)

Ken ring is promising hay making weather for August.

What price per ton are wild oats making these days???

I have some yield per acre i'd say not bad for a crop I didn't even sow.

Ken Ring,,,,,,I just heard a dog barking 4 times at 1.24am which to me indicates that we will get a dry week towards the end of August

If you find a good buyer for wild oats will you let me know, I could do serious business with him. Pitty as they could be the ideal crop, never have to resow and they never get fungus, rusts etc.

Will make the best of silage, let it wilt a bit weather permitting, bales should be ok if packed hard enough and will be heavy even if wilted, made similar stuff a few years ago silage smelled sweet and was almost black in colour it looked like grass covered in molasses and the sheep were mad for it

My experience of baling short new grass,is was very hard to make a good bale.need a rake and put in good big row.and still.
As for I hay I think possible but green grass takes longer to wilt and in my view never really gets there as well as grass, with abit stem.

My father always said black grass ment fertiliser wasn't out of it tabby.but im not sure only at the game few years.

will make good silage but will need a good wilt. Even if teh bales end up a bit saggy they will be fine, would be worth feeding straw with it. we had ones a few years ago, new grass cut and wrapped in sept so bales sagged but silage was perfect. threw it on top of the straw and the cattle left no waste

Going to cut as soon as the weather picks up.

Is it really possible that whole crop is making 900 an acre as the journal says this week???

fresh cant remember the DM but around 40% *think*. usually around €150 per DM/T at 30% min

lovely picture of mush wholecrop on the front of the IFJ yesterday. Imagine that crap will do in a cows stomach. try and get to at least 40% moisture whatever you do.

This grass currently has stems about every 6 foot as you walk through it.
I wonder will it get much more stemmy being a new re-seed??

Not too concerned about a second cut so can leave it as long as I want.
