Pads/Disc?!

Ok so basically while coming off the motor way on my way to a function last weekend my brakes gave off an awful grind.
Not knowing much about cars, I at least knew I had a brake problem.
It sounds like more of a metal grinding noise than a squeal to me so not sure if that signifies the disc.
Also when driving on straights without the brakes applied I was hearing a long pitching squeal.

I didn't have to apply the brakes much while there or on the way back and tried as much as possible to gear down and use the handbrake in 1st gear off the motor way on my way home, have the car parked up now and don't want to move it unless it's on the way to get this sorted

I've checked Advance Pitstop online and they quote E85 for brake pads and E120 for brake discs solid.
So if I need both changed it'll cost me E205 which I certainly don't have now.
Do my symptoms signify both pads and discs needing changed?. I wouldnt mind paying the E85/E120 alone but I can't afford to bring it for a check and find out its both.
While getting tyres changed nearly 2 years ago the guy informed me one of my discs had a lip in it(I don't do many miles on top)

If I needed both changed I'd rather get them on ebay and pay someone to install them.

That comes to E32 and E46.

Thoughts?.... if it looks like both are gone and the parts option seems better how long of a job is it, difficulty in terms of cost to ask someone to fit them.

Can you take off the wheel and take a picture? Advance Pitstop are likely to tell you you need discs even if you don't. A good indy mechanic is better, but they may or may not fit parts they didn't supply.

As this is the DIY forum, you could always have a shot at changing them yourself

could be a stone wedged in but most likely a pad worn to the steel back. a set of pads will most likely sort it

Pads and discs may be fine. You can check these for wear easy enough with a torch by looking through the gaps in the wheels. Sounds more like a sticking caliper or the handbrake is too tight.

Easier to see with the wheel off.

Brake pad on it's last legs. A brake pad has only two parts. A metal backing plate and a abrasive compound against the disc. If the compound is thinner than the backing pad they've not long left. This one isn't too bad but you get the idea.

This ones worse. Old pad - new pad. The pic above is my front left brake. The caliper is sticking. Below is what I took off my front right. As you can see it's alot thinner as it does most of the work so check both side. You may if your unlucky like me have worn pads and discs and sticking calipers.
